    OCSD DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Orange County Sheriffs Department is made up of about twenty divisions that cover five organizational functions: Public Protection; Jail Operations; Technical Services like investigations, coroner services, and emergency management; and Administrative and Support Services.

Other divisions include, but are not limited to, K-9 Units, Animal Control Services, 9-1-1 Dispatch/Communications, Crime Prevention, SWAT Teams, Bicycle Units, Traffic, Records, Administrative and Patrol.

The county that these law enforcement officers work in is affluent, but it is only 948 sq miles, making it the smallest in Southern California.

Although the county is small, their Sheriff oversees the second largest department in California (following Los Angeles County) and the fourth largest in the nation, providing police services to all unincorporated county areas as well as twelve of Orange County's 34 municipalities with police service contracts.

The Sheriff also manages the county's jail system, which processes more than 60,000 bookings a year and supervises more than 4,600 prisoners at any given time. The Sheriff also provides bailiffs and serves process for Orange County's court system. OC Sheriffs handle law enforcement services for John Wayne Airport, all Orange County harbors and the entire bus system, too.

The success of the police departments in Orange County rests on their ability work well with other local, state, federal law enforcement, community agencies and citizen groups. OC police rely on the Community Policing model to do their jobs.

Community Policing is a methodology that assigns patrol officers, investigators and traffic officers to the same geographic area for a certain length of time, which gives them the opportunity to get to know the people that live and work there.  Understanding and being accountable for neighborhood needs helps strengthen OC Police Department “partnerships” with the civilians they serve.

The Orange County Police and Sheriff Departments incorporate several values in their law enforcement work.  Some of these, like courage, duty and commitment are fairly obvious.  But emphasis is also placed on organizational growth and values, teamwork and community service.

They are proud of the fact that, when polled, 97% of their residents said they felt safe in their homes and communities thanks to the Department’s efforts.  It is interesting to note that the areas patrolled by OC law enforcement entities are also statistically the safest in the State, especially when compared to areas of similar population.
