Rancho Santa Margarita offers the best of two worlds: it has all the advantages of a small city plus the peaceful quality of life in a rural village. The city is populated by about 49,000 residents and it officially became Orange County’s 33rd city in 2000.

Their police are very proud of both their methods of crime fighting and their ability to maintain an atmosphere of community with the public. There is wide range of community policing programs available to residents and businesses alike. Locals are encouraged to participate in the effort to preserve Rancho Santa Margarita’s quality of life.

Only one Lieutenant is responsible for the day-to-day operation of police services, and she also manages five Sergeants, two Investigators, one Investigative Assistant, nineteen Deputies (Traffic and Patrol), two Motorcycle Deputies, one Deputy assigned to the regional Directed Enforcement Team (DET), two Special Enforcement Team (SET) Deputies, two Community Service Officers, one Crime Prevention Specialist, and one Administrative Secretary.

The OC Sheriff’s Department also gives locals access to some interesting, specialized units, like their Canine Patrol, Computer Crime and Economic Crime Units, Forensic Science Services, Gang Enforcement, Hazardous Devices, Helicopter Patrol, Homicide Detail, Major Accident Reconstruction Team, Mounted Patrol, Narcotics Detail, Sex Crimes, Family Violence, Tactical Support Team/Hostage Negotiations, and Terrorism Early Warning Group.

The RSMPD devotes a lot of time to their public programs, which include crime prevention, Business Watch/Neighborhood Watch and a community awareness group. There are also Childhood Watch and School Safety Programs, Community Emergency Preparedness Academy, Business and Home Security Checks, Vacation Home Checks, Child Safety Seat Inspections, and Child Fingerprinting Services. Police are also available to do presentations on crime-related topics at special events.
