LAGUNA HILLS POLICE DEPARTMENT INFORMATION
Laguna Hills is located in South Orange County between Los Angeles and San Diego. It is about 6.4 square miles in size and 31,017 residents call it home.
Although most of Laguna Hills is residential, it also has a strong commercial base. Laguna Hills officially became a city in 1991. Prior to that it enjoyed a rich history in the 1800 and 1900's as a place to raise and ranch cattle. The city itself was built on one of the major land tracts that were created in this “Rancho Era” following Mexico's independence from Spain in 1821.
Rancho Lomas de Santiago, Rancho San Joaquin, and Rancho Niguel covered much of the western portion of the Saddleback Valley, the site of Laguna Hills. All this land was eventually subdivided in the early 1960's.
The Laguna Hills Police Department practices a methodology of Community Policing to make their city one of the safest in the country. This is a style of law enforcement that encourages working together with citizens to solve crime related problems and develop new measures of crime prevention.
Laguna Hills, along with several other South County cities, contracts with the Orange County Sheriff's Department for all its law enforcement needs. Those arrested in Laguna Hills will be taken to an OCSD jail. It has a full-time police force, investigative services, vehicle abatement, crime prevention activities, traffic enforcement, and accident investigations.
In addition, Animal Control Services – another division of the police are provided under contract with the County of Orange. They provide pet care, recovery, and pet education and training for residents.
Then there’s Emergency Management which is responsible for preparing and maintaining an emergency operations plan and for promoting a better citywide understanding of emergency preparedness.
