Sources within the Orange County Sheriff's Department have confirmed the department is requesting state funding which would be earmarked to expand the Musick Jail.

If everything goes a planned, the county could receive up to $80 million dollars.  This isn't to say that the facility is ready to break ground on a new wing.  There is a lot that still needs to be worked out.

For example, Sheriff's Department staff members still need to meet with the Irvine City Council to go over their plans to seek an additional state funding.

A total of $500 million is available, and the biggest pieces of this pie are being given to counties that are looking to replace outdated facilities with ones that are designed to help detainees transition back into society.

The maximum award is $80 million, according to the OCSD, and those funds are being dolled out to the largest counties.  It's still not clear if Sacramento would consider sharing some of those monies with Orange County, but if they do, it has already been earmarked to expand the Musick Jail.

The Sheriff's Department reportedly hopes to add two new housing modules to the current facility.  A total of 384 beds would be added and the modules would be used for medical care, treatment and programming.

The biggest problem may be getting approval from neighboring communities.  It's not yet clear when this proposal will be brought to the public.
