A man arrested and jailed in Redwood City on a $500,000 bail earlier this year was granted probation and substance abuse treatment.

Redwood City police arrested 49-year-old Eddie Darrell Boyce Jr. when President Barack Obama was visiting the city in May, for driving the wrong way on the street a presidential motorcade was traveling on and for trying to flee the police, the Daily Journal reported. Boyce had driven his car around the barricades of a street that was sealed off due to the motorcade. Police tried to stop Boyce, but he tried to flee the scene by turning his car in the wrong lane of traffic. He ended up hitting a curb and street sign.

Boyce pleaded no contest in August to his felony evasion charge, according to the article. He told police he knew the president was visiting but that he was not trying to harm him. He also said he did not hear the police siren and was trying to drive to a friend's house when he was arrested.

A judge sentenced Boyce to three years probation, the Daily Journal reported. He also has to complete a drug and alcohol treatment program through the Department of Veterans Affairs.

District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe told the Daily Journal he believes the sentence is fair because there was no firm evidence that Boyce had actually planned to harm the president during the incident.

The Redwood City website said the president was in town May 23 for a campaign fundraising event. An announcement of the event on the website told motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area where Obama was expected to be.
