Two contractors recently struck a deal to build a new jail in San Mateo County. According to the San Francisco Business Times, the two companies, Sundt Construction Inc. and Layton Construction Co. Inc., which have experience building jails, won a bid to build the new $130 million Redwood City Jail on 4.75 acres of land..

Man released on bond after arrest for DUI, crash

A San Diego man is scheduled to be arraigned on October 10 after he was pulled over on suspicion of drinking and driving and released on bond. According to The Desert Sun, 40-year-old Alberto Alvarez was arrested on August 13 after allegedly being involved in a car crash on a local highway.

Sheriff's Sergeant Brad Farwell told the source that someone reported the crash, which was allegedly caused by Alvarez's Ford Expedition side swiping a Chevrolet Cobalt after failing to properly switch lanes.

Professor released on reduced bail

A 63-year-old woman suspected of attempting to suffocate an elderly man was released from a San Diego jail recently after her bail bond was lowered. According to the San Diego Reader, Donna Darling's original bail was set at $500,000, but she was able to leave the facility on August 25 after Superior Court Judge Richard Mills decided to lower the  amount to $10,000, which she was able to post.

California jails to soon impose new mail rules

Inmates incarcerated in San Diego County jails will no longer be able to receive handwritten letters, except postcards. On September 1, a new policy will go into effect that will prohibit inmates from reading letters that are not sent through email or postcard form in an effort to cut down on potential drug smuggling.

California lawyer released on bail bond after her arrest

A Northern California lawyer was recently released from jail in Redwood City after being booked on suspicion of handing a prisoner pills during a visitation session. According to The Associated Press, Erika Jordening allegedly passed several pills to prisoner Aaron Rauls. She arrested, and her Redwood City bail was set at $70,000. However, she was later released bailbond after authorities discovered that the pills she passed to Rauls contained melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate sleep and wake cycles.

New reports show that residents living in California's San Mateo County may not have to worry as much about crime in their neighborhoods as other residents of the state. According to the County of San Mateo's 2011-2012 profile document, the county's crime rate was one of the lowest in California in 2009. More than two-dozen arrests in Orange County operation

Law enforcement officials raided several homes of people they suspected to be involved in a street gang in August, resulting in 33 arrests and the confiscation of drugs, weapons and money. According to The Orange County Register, police had been investigating the gang since June of last year and the gang garnered national attention after two local police officers were shot in one weekend.

Former psychiatrist denied bail, re-trial set
