A Northern California lawyer was recently released from jail in Redwood City after being booked on suspicion of handing a prisoner pills during a visitation session. According to The Associated Press, Erika Jordening allegedly passed several pills to prisoner Aaron Rauls. She arrested, and her Redwood City bail was set at $70,000. However, she was later released bailbond after authorities discovered that the pills she passed to Rauls contained melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate sleep and wake cycles.

According to the San Mateo County Times, Steve Wagstaffe, San Mateo County District Attorney, said that Jordening will most likely not face charges for the crime because the medication did not contain illegal substances. The source reported that although Jordening is not Rauls' lawyer, she was able to use her status as a lawyer to meet with him at the Maguire Correctional Facility because they are in a relationship.

Contraband isn't the only thing being smuggled into California prisons. According to the Los Angeles Times, notorious killer Charles Manson has been caught twice in the past two years with a cellphone. Manson, who is currently serving a life sentence, sent texts and made phone calls to people in California, Florida, New Jersey and British Columbia before authorities seized his telephone. The source reported that the number of people caught with cellphones has been on the rise. California prison guards found 1,400 cellphones in 2007, 6,995 in 2009 and more than 8,700 in 2010. People caught giving a cellphone to prisoners face up to one year in jail.

This smuggling incident isn't the first time Jordening has been accused of committing a crime. Jordening will go on trial on September 24 for petty theft, a crime which she has been convicted for in the past. According to Patch.com, on December 2, 2011, Jordening and Rauls were stopped by security officials in a Colma, California, Kohl's store on suspicion of theft. When they were searched, security found $129 in stolen clothing and $180 of jewelry on Jordening. Rauls is currently serving time in Redwood City jail for a previous drug charge, and his bail for the alleged Kohl's theft was set at $35,000.
