Sonoma Jails May Start Releasing Low-Level Offenders Much Sooner

The California inmate realignment program, which shifted certain non-serious, non-sexual and non-violent offenders from state prisons to county jails, is still causing challenges at the local level.

Officials at the Sonoma County Jail, for example, say they'll soon be releasing additional people through a pretrial assessment program in order to free up bed space.

Starting on Dec. 1, if the jail feels an offender doesn't pose a risk to public safety, that they are unlikely to commit new crimes and they are likely going to appear at their court date, bail bonds may not be needed.

The defendants will still need to …

LAPD Accused Of Using Ghost Cars To Boost Patrol Numbers

Last week's report by the Police Commission's inspector general found that "at least five" LAPD patrol divisions have been flubbing their numbers to make it look as if more officers were out on patrol; officers who were working on other tasks that kept them out of a squad car were logged as being out in the field.

The phenomenon, according to the report, is referred to as "ghost car" deployment.

Police unions have been blasting the LAPD, saying the department has been fudging reports to make it look like they had enough patrols on the street.  In reality, the numbers are …

Stolen Food Pantry Van Found Outside A Grocery Store

A spokesperson for the Hayward Police Department say they stumbled across a rather interesting find this week when a stolen food pantry van was found in a grocery store parking lot.

The South Hayward Parish say the vehicle went missing in the early part of the week; sources say they never expected it would turn up where it did.

Officers received a tip about the vans location from an employee of the store.  She saw it hanging out outside the market and recognized it from the recent media reports.   Police drove out right away and quickly determined that yes, this was …

ICE Deal To Be Extended In LA County Jails

Earlier this week, the LA County Board of Supervisors voted 3-0 to extend a controversial partnership that allows immigration officials to target non-legal status inmates who have been convicted of serious crimes, and determine whether they can be deported once their sentences are up.

The remaining two supes abstained.

Immigration activists have already started to speak out against the decision, saying it only serves to drive a further wedge between residents and law enforcement officials within the city's immigrant communities.

The program itself is simple-  immigration officials placed within county lockups, such as the Twin Towers Jail, and their job is to …

CA Prisoner Realignment: The Long-Term Plan

In the wake of California's prisoner realignment program, county lockups have found themselves needing to resolve two key things.  Number one, many of these facilities are old and in dire need of replacement or upgrades.

Number two- the detention centers need to better plan for how to hot only hold more inmates, but how to handle long-term housing, health care needs of those who are serving time.
Cutting incarceration rates and building new jails
Ever since realignment was implemented, county jails have found themselves needing to house an ever-growing number of people in a very limited space; because of that, many places …

Theives Hit Car On Freeway Offramp, Then Carjack It

Sources within the San Diego Police Department say a local couple was quite frazzled last weekend after three suspects crashed into their car and then carjacked them.

The incident took place just before 10 p.m. on Saturday night, they said, when the couple was getting off Interstate 5 at the Nobel Drive offramp.

The driver of that car pulled over to exchange insurance information with the vehicle that struck them.  That's when one of the passengers of the other vehicle stepped out, pulled a gun and ordered the couple to hand over their keys, wallets and cell phones.  The woman's purse …

Passed Out Drunk Driver Caught With Weapons, Drugs

Most criminals try to do their best to avoid the long arm of the law, but that seems not to be the case in Northern California.

A spokesperson for the San Francisco Police Department say an alleged drunk driver has been booked at the Bryant Street Jail after police responded to call about him being passed out in his car.

Officers drove out to the intersection of Fullerton and 40th Avenue and arrived just before midnight.  Witnesses said they'd seen the car swerving about neighborhood streets; they suspected whoever was driving it had a few too many to drink.

Police found the …

Mail Thief Tries To Evade Police By Feigning Sleep

A lot of times, when a criminal realizes the police are on their tail, they make a run for it.  They sprint through yards, hop fences, but they rarely (if ever) stop drop and snore.

But this week, the Santa Monica Police Department said they arrested an alleged letter-snatcher after he did just that.  Mail theft is a very big deal, they said, and a suspect can't just sleep things off and pretend like the crime didn't happen.

Officers said they were tipped off about the letter burglar earlier last month.  The caller said someone had been pilfering things from their …

OC Jails Evaluating Programs To Help Reduce Recidivism

Officials in Orange County say they will likely expand their efforts to keep former inmates from committing new crimes once they are released.

This is all part of California's efforts to cut inmate populations at both prisons and the county jails.  Inmate overcrowding has long been a problem for the Golden State, according to sources, and it's gotten to the point where the Supreme Court has found it unconstitutional.  The justices went so far as to order CA to reduce their prisoner population to no more than 137.5 percent of rated capacity.

Prisons weren't prepared to simply open the floodgates for …
