The Recession and America’s Prisons

The Recession and America’s Prisons

In the United States, the incarceration rate is the highest in the world.

The recession has forced many prisons to tighten up their financial belts in order to save on costs. That means more prisoners being housed in tighter confines.

This can only have a negative impact. Additional funds are expected from the federal level in order to help improve conditions.

San Mateo Police Arrest McDonalds Manager Who Robbed His Store

A spokesperson for the San Mateo Police Department has confirmed that officers have arrested Felix Becerra, a 42 year-old McDonalds manager who robbed his own store.

Becerra is also believed to have held up another San Mateo restaurant at gunpoint during that same week.

Officers said they captured the suspect after San Mateo Police followed a vehicle that had been linked to an armed robbery at a local McDonalds.

It was later learned that this same vehicle was linked to a second robbery, this one taking place at the franchise location in Alameda County that employed him.  Officers said that Becerra climbed …

The Future of LAPD’s Parker Center

The future of the former headquarters of the Los Angeles Police Department is uncertain.
City officials will begin to hold public hearings in order to find out the public opinion on what the future should be for the run-down building. Cost estimates for each alternative have not been presented by the city’s Bureau of Engineering.

Closed in October 2009, there are reportedly three alternatives for the facility:
Option One: Partial Demolition
Partially demolishing the building would (more…)

Orange County Hopes To Expand Musick Jail

Sources within the Orange County Sheriff's Department have confirmed the department is requesting state funding which would be earmarked to expand the Musick Jail.

If everything goes a planned, the county could receive up to $80 million dollars.  This isn't to say that the facility is ready to break ground on a new wing.  There is a lot that still needs to be worked out.

For example, Sheriff's Department staff members still need to meet with the Irvine City Council to go over their plans to seek an additional state funding.

A total of $500 million is available, and the biggest pieces …

Unusual Laws: Watch Your Mouth

I’ll Say Whatever The ...  I Want
In America, we relish the fact that we have the right to say whatever we want.

But in some states, there are exceptions to that rule.

Even in this day and age, there are state laws that make it illegal to use profane language in public, but there are laws beyond that including laws that dictate where you can use certain language and even who you can encourage to use such language.

For example, 36-year-old Wesley Force Jr. was arrested for public cursing.

The incident occurred earlier this year when Force got into a disagreement with the …

State Senate Rejects Plan To Send CA Prisoners To Private Facilities

Gov. Jerry Brown is still trying to figure out how to deal with the state's overcrowded prisoner population.

As it stands, California is under court order to trim an additional 9,600 detainees from its prisons before the end of the year.   Sheriffs departments from all over the state are calling this a bad and dangerous move.

The best of the worst have already had their sentences trimmed, they said, and releasing nearly 10,000 felons onto the street will have a huge impact on public safety.

Brown's most recent plan involved (more…)

Suspect Bites Police Dog

When most people think about a dog bite they imagine a human with a bloody shin.

In most cases that's about right - but the San Jose Police Department said that's not how things worked out earlier this week.

Representatives from the department said a suspect was hospitalized after fighting with, and eventually biting, a department K9.
Although the unnamed man remains hospitalized, he is expected to be transported to the Martinez Detention Facility in the near future.
He is expected to be booked on charges relating to (more…)

Man Robs Bank For $1 To Get Health Care In Jail

Everyone will agree that health care is expensive- especially for those who don't carry insurance.

But have things gotten so bad that people are willing to be sent to jail in order to see a doctor?

Defendant Tim Alsip says yes.

This Portland, OR defendant decided to have himself rearrested so he could receive free medical care.

Bank employees said the man walked into their storefront last week, walked up to the counter and produced a demand note.  The note indicated that Alsip was "holding them up and that he wanted one dollar".   The teller was a bit confused, but complied.

The man then …
