Theiving Jedi In Hot Water For Stealing Star Wars Memorabilia

Just in time for Comi-Con...
An 18 year-old Riverside man could soon find himself booked at the Riverside County Jail now that officers believe he'd run off with someone else's swag.

The man was initially questioned in the downtown area by members of the gang unit.   After a few minutes, they discovered a bunch of (likely valuable) Star Wars memorabilia on him.

Although he tried his best to convince police that he'd "found" the items, the force in the young man was not strong enough to pull the lie off.

Detectives said he hardly seemed credible, so they confiscated collector cards, a poster …

Orange County Jails Help Feed The Less Fortunate

When you think about the county lock up, you're likely to think about things such as crime, bail bonds and people who are serving time.  But now, at least one of the Orange County Jails has started to give back to the community.

Namely, they're turning over excess lunch meat (and other food stuffs) to the St. Francis Home and the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center.

There is quite a bit of food that's prepared for inmates on a daily basis, according to a representative from the Theo Lacy Jail, and not all of it gets used.

And now, instead of tossing …

Grand Theft Cheese Bus? It Happened In NorCal

Authorities in Northern California have said they've arrested two men who literally made off with the cheddar.

Suspects Ryan Monaco and Brian Lancaster are believed to be connected to a crime that took place last weekend.  Basically, the pair is accused of commandeering Tillamook cheese vehicles from an area parking lot.

And once the thefts took place, the media, and social media fans of the beloved brand, made sure the news went viral.

Authorities think the suspects stole a pick up truck and a trailer that contained three microbuses, all of which were part of a cheese transport caravan.  The vehicles stopped …

OC Jail Expansion Proposal Inches Forward

The saga surrounding the proposed expansion of the James Musick Jail continues
The county says they need to add more bed space to accommodate the influx of prisoners that are being shifted to OC jails due to the state's inmate realignment program.

Lake Forest residents, though, are saying "not so fast", and are fighting against a proposal that would add more than 512 beds to the local detention center.

The fight has been going on for years, according to city officials, and it even once faced a push-back after the city of Irvine filed a lawsuit in hopes of preventing the Musick …

Sheriff Says Cost To Build New Santa Barbara Jail Is Hard To Estimate

Sheriff Says Cost To Build New Santa Barbara Jail Is Hard To Estimate

The County Board of Supervisor may have given Sheriff Bill Brown the green light to collect $39 million in state grant funding that's been earmarked to help with an expansion at the Santa Barbara County Jail, Brown says it's still too soon to predict just how much that project will cost.

As it stands, he's tossed out what he calls a "best estimate" in terms of what operational, staffing and other related costs will look like.

But there's no guarantee that figure won't change in the future.

The expansion, which will be geared toward reducing recividism, will provide transitional housing for nearly …

Move Over “Hot Felon”, SFPD’s “Hot Cop” Is Taking Over

Move Over “Hot Felon”, SFPD’s “Hot Cop” Is Taking Over

In the past few weeks there's been a lot of talk about Jeremy Meeks, a California bad guy whose well-taken mug shot got him a whole lot of attention.

But now, after an amateur photographer snapped a pic of San Francisco Police Department officer Chris Kohrs, the public has some new eye candy to fawn over- and this "hot cop" is on the right side of the legal system.

It all started when a local resident saw Kohrs while he was guarding a Castro District construction zone.  He took a few pics, uploaded the photos to social media websites and from …

“Sexy Felon” Says Goodbye To His Female Fans

Those who've been following the trials and tribulations of "sexy felon" Jeremy Meeks are out of luck, because the days of his mugshots popping up on the San Joaquin County Jail website seem to be over.

Meeks, who gained quite a few female Facebook followers after his mugshot landed on a social media website, is in deeper water than initially thought.

The state was planning on bringing him up on about a dozen different charges but since that time the federal government has stepped in with a charge of their own.

Meeks has since been transferred from state to federal custody where …

Maguire Jail May Start Shipping Inmates To Alameda County

Last week, Sheriff Greg Munks requested the Board of Supervisors consider a request that would allow him to ship overflow inmates one county over.

The bid received unanimous approval; the two-year contract could be worth up to $3 million for Alameda County.

The contract is basically a "CYA" for the Maguire Jail.  As it stands, San Mateo detention facilities aren't overcrowded and the sheriff doesn't see that changing in the near future.

Essentially, it's an insurance policy; a "just in case" measure that would allow inmates at the Maguire Jail to be sent to Dublin in the case of unforeseen circumstances.

That could …

Expanded Riverside County Jail Will Focus On Rehabalitation, Education

Expanded Riverside County Jail Will Focus On Rehabalitation, Education

Inside The Jails
There's been a lot of back and forth about what lies ahead for the yet-to-be-built Indio Jail.

For one, if a person is arrested and winds up being held there, their only visitation with friends and family members will be via video conferencing.

And although that's a change that's being implemented at detention centers throughout the country, what's new for this particular facility is that inmates will likely have access to all sorts of training programs.
Offsetting overcapacity
The Riverside County Jail system, like others in the state, have been dealing with growing pains brought on by inmate overcrowding.

As it stands, …

San Francisco Jails To Revisit Guard Gender Policies

In 2006, former San Francisco Sheriff Michael Hennessey came to a decision.  After year-on-year investigations that involved male deputies having illicit (not to mention illegal) relations with female inmates, he changed the rules.

All female inmates would be relocated to one, central facility and it could only be staffed by female deputies.

In theory it was a good idea, but in practicum, well not so much.  Less than a year after the switch, more than 30 deputies challenged that decision in court.

The sex-discrimination lawsuit was brought against both the city and the county and the defendants, most of whom were women, …
