Are LA Jails Violating International Laws?

African Americans make up less than 10 percent of Los Angeles County's total jail population, but account for more than 40 percent of those who have been classified as having a serious mental illness.

Students and faculty at the UCLA School of Law have prepared an eight-page report that alleges the LA County Jails are incarcerating racial minorities who are mentally ill inmates at unsettling rates.

The authors of the report feel that these inmate populations would be better served by other types of community-based programs and that jailing these men and women is not appropriate.

According to the report, black inmates …

Menlo Park Burglar Wanted For Grand Theft Box

It was the best of crimes, it was the worst of crimes...

Menlo Park Police say they're looking for a burglar who pulled off a rather anti climactic heist.  It all started several days ago when an unknown man broke into a local BevMo.

From there, he made a fast line to a box that (in theory) should have contained a $1,900 bottle of whiskey.  But it would seem the would-be thief was outsmarted by the store's manager, who had previously stashed the bottle in a safe,  locked area of the retail establishment.

The burglar did get away with the box, and …

CA Jails Still Going To The Dogs

It wasn't all that long ago that some of the Orange County Jails initiated a program that allowed inmates to help rehabilitate rescue dogs, as a means of training them to become more adoptable.

And in early June, volunteers rescued five more dogs from high-kill shelters and brought them to one of the state's high security prisons.   The idea behind this, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation- is to give certain state inmates the task of helping "rehabilitate" these high-risk dogs so they too can find forever homes.

The most recent group of dogs graduated from the 12-week …

Top 3 Things To Ask Your Bondsman

If you've never been asked to help get someone out of jail before, the idea of needing to hire a bail bonds company can seem completely foreign.

Sure, all companies are required to charge the same rate but that's not to say that all companies are alike.  When you do start to call around these are the three most important questions you'll want to ask your bondsman before deciding who to go with.

What hours does the company keep?  Just because someone picks up the phone in the middle of the night doesn't guarantee the agent you're talking to posts bail …

San Diego Law Enforcement Holds Fundraiser For Slain Officer’s Family

A number of San Diego law enforcement agencies joined together last weekend to hold a car wash fundraiser to help raise money for a slain Escondido Police officer's family.

The officer was murdered several weeks ago by her husband in what appears to be a domestic violence incident.  Although the woman had only been with the Escondido PD for a short period of time, her supervisors said she was quickly becoming a leader among her peers.

Officer Laura leaves behind a small daughter.  Her husband, Freddy Rodas, has since been booked into an area jail where he's being held on murder …

Barbies Hiding Thousands Of Pounds Of Pot

A spokesperson for the San Bernardino Police Department said criminals' plans to make a bunch of money selling weed went up in smoke after officers found more than 10,000 pounds of marijuana that had been hidden behind a pile of Barbies.

Officers said it all started after an investigation pointed them in the direction of a truck depot.  When they arrived, they found a tractor trailer that smelled pretty suspicious.

When they opened the back they found what appeared to be a shipment of toys but upon closer look, they realized the dolls were little more than a decoy.

A spokesperson for …

Godzilla Arrested Nearly 60 Times In Past Two Years

A man who prefers to go by the moniker "Godzilla" has once again been booked into the San Joaquin County Jail.

Authorities say the habitual defendant is formally named Scott Swafford, and he's been arrested nearly 60 times in the past 24 months.

Most of his run ins with the law are for being drunk in public, according to jail staff, and in most cases, police bring him in so he can sober up.

At one point, he'd even been arrested three times in just four days.  In another instance he was arrested five times in less than two weeks.  Jail staff …

Courts Rule In Favor Of Bail Bonds

There's been a great deal of media attention on New Jersey's battle with "bail reform", but there are a number of other battles taking place throughout the US.

Take Ohio, for example.  Just last month that state's Supreme Court ruled it was unconstitutional to prohibit commercial bail bonding by instead mandating defendants pay a 10 percent cash deposit directly with the court.

The ruling essentially opened the door for companies offering corporate surety bonds to do business.

A ruling in the state of Washington ended with a similar result.  Courts are no longer allowed to only accept 10% in cash; they must …

The Cold Facts About Incarceration

Deputies Look Forward To A Bigger, Better Indio Jail

Representatives from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department corrections division are hoping the new Indio jail will not only help reduce jail crowding, but that it will also help ease tensions within the inmate population.

Sources close to the jails say things have gotten so packed that some offenders are getting in trouble on purpose, just so they can be tossed in the SHU.

Recent inspections of the Riverside County Jails showed (more…)
