United Way’s Donations Policy Backfires During The Giving Time Of Year

United Way’s Donations Policy Backfires During The Giving Time Of Year

The holiday season is typically a giving time of year, but a flawed United Way donations policy that re-routed funds that should have been earmarked for the OC Sheriff's Department Advisory Council into their general pool has caused a massive uproar.

The Sheriff's Department Advisory Council provides funds for causes that aren't supported by the OCSD budget; families of officers who have been injured or killed in the line of duty are the most frequent beneficiaries.

Until recently, more than 1,000 members of the department had set up auto-deductions from their paychecks.  In theory, the monies should have gone to support …

LASD, LAPD K-9s More Likely To Bite Than Long Beach Police Dogs

LASD, LAPD K-9s More Likely To Bite Than Long Beach Police Dogs

Recent statistics indicate that Long Beach Police Department dogs have a bite ration that is nearly three times less than their Los Angeles counterparts.

The LAPD and LASD dogs bite far more frequently, they said, and the Long Beach PD says they're happy to have such low numbers.   The bite ratio is calculated by comparing the number of bites against the number of dog-apprehended suspects.

In 2012 the LASD has a bite ratio of about 30 percent, according to recent numbers, while the LAPD's bite ration is about 20.5 percent.  When you contrast that with the 6 percent seen within the …

$1 Million Settlement Reached In Santa Rita Jail Wrongful Death Lawsuit

$1 Million Settlement Reached In Santa Rita Jail Wrongful Death Lawsuit

The family of a 51 year-old man who died while in custody at the Santa Rita Jail has settled their lawsuit for $1 million.

Court documents alleged that deputies beat, kicked, tased, improperly restrained and brutalized the man inside his cell block.  He died approximately 48 hours later.

Half of the settlement is being paid to Martin Harrison's 10 year-old son by Alameda County.  The county jail's healthcare provider,  Corizon Health, will need to pay the balance.

Harrison was arrested in 2011 after he failed to appear in court after being arrested for drunk driving.  Family members say he definitely had a …

Vacation Nightmares: Getting Arrested While Traveling Abroad

Vacation Nightmares: Getting Arrested While Traveling Abroad

For most people, the word vacation stirs mental images of blended cocktails and white sandy beaches.

A stint in a foreign jail cell isn't usually on a traveler's to-do list.

So how do you avoid getting arrested while visiting a different country?

In many cases it's best to let common sense be your guide.  It also won't hurt to brush up on local laws.  You will also want to remember that just because things are one way in the US, that's not to say they are the same way throughout the globe.

LA Jail Project Kisses $80 Million In State Funding Good Bye

LA Jail Project Kisses $80 Million In State Funding Good Bye

Los Angeles County has long wanted to break ground on a women's jail project, but recent chatter out of Sacramento indicates their bid for $80 million in grant funding has been shot down.

Local detentions officials have long-hoped to construct a 1,600-bed facility at the Mira Loma Detention Center site.  In order to do that, they said, they'd use $100 million in state grant funding they received last year but would still need another $80 million this year in order to get the project off the ground.

The additional funds had reportedly been earmarked to construct facilities geared toward providing vocational …

3 Strange Arguments That Lead to Arrests in 2013

We all get into lively “discussions” with friends, family and loved ones from time to time.

A heated argument can quickly spiral into something that does physical damage. And that’s when the police have to get involved.

Some of the most ridiculous arguments can end with an arrest, for one or both parties involved.

Here are three 2013 cases of a rabid discussion ending in handcuffs and a ride to the police station:
Don’t Scratch!
On February 19, 2013, Ronald Howard, 30, and his girlfriend Shalamar Petrarca, 25, were getting ready to eat dinner when an argument between the two started over the proper …

Environmentally Friendly And Emmision Free

LAPD Eyes Electric Motorcycles
Just about everyone is going green these days, and the LAPD is no exception.

The department is currently working with Scotts Valley-based Zero Motorcycles and is weighing whether to add a few new bikes to its fleet.

The company is already partnered with other law enforcement agencies throughout the state, and feels the LAPD could benefit from going green.

The 67 horsepower bikes can travel up to 100 highway or 171 city miles before losing their charge and could save the Los Angeles Police Department tens of thousands of dollars in gas expenses over their lifetime.

They're much lighter and …

Ladies: These Unusual Laws Are for You

There are so many unusual laws out there.

And we just know that it’s because someone (often times a man) has done something that made it necessary to enact a law to stop it.

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t laws that are geared specifically to the ladies.
What you can, can’t and must wear
What lady doesn’t love a sassy pair of heels?

Well, check the law books before you bring them out of the closet, because in some cities like Carmel California, you must have a (free) permit to wear them inside the city limits.

The law was enacted to prevent people who …

One Officer, One Year – 100 DUI Arrests And Counting

San Rafael PD Officer Hits 2013 Milestone
Officer Kevin MacDougald has a message for would-be drunk drivers:  if you get behind the wheel of a car, you will be caught.

MacDougald just made his 100th DUI arrest this year, according to San Rafael Police Department records, and he's showing no signs of slowing down.   To put this into greater perspective, his arrests account for about a third of the total DUI arrests made by the department in 2013.

Officer MacDougald said he does it because he likes it and because he takes pride in keeping streets safe.   One of his most …

Bail Bond Companies Get Creative In Catching Skips

You Can Run, But You Can Hide
In this day and age, you might need to provide a bondsman with more than a name, address and phone number if you want to get someone out of jail.

Bail bondsmen are becoming more and more savvy when it comes to tracking down skips.  Sure, the questions a defendant is asked during the bail bonds approval process can seem a bit odd, but there is in fact a method to the agent's madness.

Social media is often the key.  Asking for a person's Facebook, Twitter and Instagram info can seem a bit strange …
