LA County Jail Opponents Say Adding Beds Won’t Help Mentally Ill Inmates

Although the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is considering a plan to expand the county's jail system, some have called the idea of adding more beds misguided at best.

A growing portion of the inmate population is mentally ill, they said, and the greater focus should be on treatment, not detention.

Sure, spending the money would allow more people to be locked up, but the ACLU says it will do nothing in terms of enhancing public safety.

Two San Joaquin County Jail Inmates Escape In Two Days

A spokesperson for the San Joaquin County Jail Honor Farm has confirmed that two inmates have escaped in as many days.

It all started last weekend when inmate Melvin Rasberry managed to escape the French Camp Jail.  Corrections officials said they counted him in the morning, but when they did rounds later that night, he was nowhere to be found.

A second inmate escaped the following day.

Representatives from the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department said they searched the area extensively, but turned up empty handed.

The first inmate is reportedly a "known associate" of Matthew Cook, otherwise known as escapee number two. …

Man Who Sold Pot Brownies To School Kids Gets 3-Years

A Costa Mesa man who sold pot brownies to a local teenager has pled guilty to one count of selling marijuana to a minor and one count of furnishing marijuana to a minor.

The judge has sentenced him to 36 months behind bars.

Costa Mesa Police Department officers said all started last year after seven elementary school students became sick after unknowingly consuming some of the pot-laced treats.

A 12 year-old student had brought the brownie onto campus, according to police reports, and classmate shared it with the other students.  Six boys and one girl needed to be hospitalized as a result.

An inmate who was serving a six and a half year sentence at a minimum security prison in the UK said "enough was enough", and that the constant playing of loud hip-hop music led is what prompted his jailbreak.

A small team of Anaheim Police detectives quickly grew to 75 during a four-week homicide investigation involving at least five women. Detective Julissa Trapp led the investigation.

When the body of Jarrae Estepp was discovered on a recycling conveyor belt at the dump, detectives had virtually no evidence to go on.

Backlash for NYPD Twitter Campaign Spreads to LAPD

According to a recent report, an attempt to show more positive interaction between the NYPD and members of the community has suffered some serious backlash.

The department launched a twitter campaign encouraging citizens to share photos of themselves with members of the NYPD and using the hashtag #myNYPD on the social network.

Instead, what the city got was a lot of negative images of police officers wielding batons and arresting protestors. This including one of an 84-year old man allegedly beaten for jaywalking.

Just six years ago, it was determined that federal oversight was needed for the Orange County jails.  But a recent report indicates that time may soon be coming to an end.

The jails of today are much different than they jails of the past, according to a statement by the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice, who further goes on to describe the facilities as "much improved".

San Diego Jail Escapee Recaptured Near Petco Park

A 21-year old robbery suspect that escaped from the San Diego Central Jail has been recaptured.

Angelo Paschall was taken into custody on Monday afternoon after he store employees at a Burlington Coat Factory caught him shoplifting.  Although he would have faced misdemeanor charges for the offense, he fought back, and the matter was escalated to a felony.

La Mesa Police Department officers arrested Paschall and transported him to the downtown jail to be booked into the system.  The suspect, however, managed to escape the building through an unlocked door.
