It's no secret that Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens has been battling breast cancer.

The sheriff was diagnosed in 2012.  She is still undergoing radiation treatment.

She, along with numerous other breast cancer survivors attended the recent Komen Orange County Survivor Celebration and Awards Luncheon that was held in Corona Del Mar.

Hutchens said she first discovered the lump during a self examination.  She went to her doctor, who then diagnosed her with stage III breast cancer.  Treatment began immediately.  She is thankful that the Komen organization has dedicated itself to hammering in the importance of examinations, regular check ups and early detection.

She also applauded their efforts in helping those who are uninsured or under-insured to locate the necessary funding for their treatments.

Other survivors were also honored.   A Huntington Beach woman was acknowledged as being this year's Most Inspirational Breast Cancer Survivor.   She had first been diagnosed in 2011 and at the time, did not have insurance.   The organization assisted her in locating a grant that ultimately paid for her treatment.

She has since gone on to raise more than $100,000 for the organization.

Two others were honored for being this year's most Outstanding Breast Health Advocate and Most Inspirational Co-Survivor.

The latter has reportedly been diagnosed a total of four times, according to Komen.  She has helped care for her mother when she was battling breast cancer and is currently assisting her best friend as she goes through chemotherapy.

Executive Director Lisa Wolter said that it is women like these that serve as an inspiration to everyone who has been diagnosed, treated and has battled this horrific disease.

Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens has said the diagnosis has given her a different perspective on life.  Her prognosis is good, according to her doctor, but cancer is still cancer.

Since that time she says she no longer stresses over the little things and that she has a greater overall appreciation for life.

She is also thankful for the overwhelming support she has received from friends, family members, coworkers, and the community.
