Since 2011, FBI agents have been tracking a man who they believe is responsible for a string of bank robberies in Los Alamitos, California where he stole $5,000 each time. Dubbed "The $5K Bandit," he held-up the same bank in Los Alamitos on three separate occasions, each time at knife-point.
For reasons that have Captain Bruce McAlpine of the Los Alamitos Police Department baffled, the suspect returned to the same U.S. Bank for a fourth time on April 15, wearing similar clothes and wielding what appeared to be the same knife used in prior instances, the Sun reported.
"I can't get into the mind of a bad guy," McAlpine said.
This time, when a bank employee called Los Alamitos police with the description of the robber, McAlpine was pleased to report that officers were ultimately able to detain the suspect, 41 year-old Keith Alonzo Smith, Sr., a resident of Long Beach.
According to Sun Newspapers, the call came into the police at around 9:15 on the morning of April 15 with the description of an African-American man in his 40s, wearing a black baseball cap, black sweatshirt, sunglasses, and a surgical mask carrying a large knife. The bank employee believed this was the same man who had robbed the U.S. Bank three times prior.
The suspect fled the scene
The suspect left the bank on foot, but was shortly thereafter identified by an officer driving away. Despite the fact that there was no vehicle description given to police, a patrolling officer noticed a person matching the suspect's description speeding west on Katella Avenue towards the 605 Freeway in a Dodge Charger. While the officer was in pursuit of Smith, The $5K Bandit lost control of his vehicle and drove off the onramp into an embankment of ice plant, the Sun reported.
According to a report released the LAPD, Smith abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, but did not make it far when the officer caught up to him. A brief struggle ensued between the officer and suspect, but when backup officers arrived, Smith was safely taken into custody after being immobilized with a stun gun. Both the suspect and the officer suffered minor abrasions, though neither required any extensive medical attention. No bank employees were hurt during Monday's incident. It is yet unknown the amount that was stolen from the U.S. Bank on Monday, but officers reportedly recovered cash at the scene of the arrest.
According to Orange County Breeze, Smith is being charged with armed robbery and was booked at Orange County Jail in Santa Ana.
