Authorities from the Costa Mesa Police Department, with an Orange County Sheriff's Department helicopter, arrested a man who allegedly robbed a bank customer at an ATM March 16. The Orange County Register reported 18-year-old Brian Gonzalez was arrested after a family member called the police department to alert them he was planning to flee the area.
The victim, a 29-year-old Huntington Beach resident, was reportedly retrieving money from the ATM when he was approached by a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt and carrying a short-barreled shotgun. The Register reported the suspect allegedly demanded the man take out money from the ATM and give it to him.
After the victim entered his personal identification number, he went to his car and pulled out a can of tear gas. According to the Register, the victim sprayed Gonzalez while he was taking money from the victim's bank account.
The suspect's family member that turned Gonzalez in told police he asked for a ride and confessed to being involved in the crime and was wanted by police. The report by the Register said officers then contacted Gonzalez on his cellphone and convinced him to surrender.
The weapon allegedly used in the crime was found in a trash bin at a nearby apartment complex, the report said.
Gonzalez is being in lieu of a $50,000 bail bond while officials determine if he is tied to previous ATM robberies.
Four arrested in connection with home burglaries
Authorities from another department were able to track down suspects they believed were involved in a series of robberies. Police from the Fountain Valley Police Department arrested four boys suspected of being connected to a series of residential robberies in the area. The Register reported police are investigating if the boys were involved in 26 burglaries in Huntington Beach and Fontana and an additional 15 attempted burglaries since mid-January.
The first arrest was made on March 13 when police were called to the home of a woman who reported someone had broken in overnight, the Register reported. After the suspect fled the scene.
Three additional suspects were arrested when detectives found several items that were reportedly stolen including iPhones, laptops and jewelry. The boys also allegedly stole cash and a vehicle, the article stated.
