A ten-day lockdown at the Theo Lacy Jail has been lifted.
The incident began on June 22 after an inmate attacked an OC Sheriff's Department deputy. The deputy had been moving that inmate at the time the attack took place. The victim sustained non-life threatening injuries. He was, though, checked out by medical personnel at a local hospital prior to being released.
Theo Lacy Jail officials have not released specifics but they have said the deputy seemed to have taken a pretty good beating. A total of four inmates participated in the attack. The participating inmates sustained cuts and bruises.
The lockdown was officially lifted on July 3. Tensions between inmates and jail staff had been running pretty high, according to a source, which is why the ten-day measure was taken place. Jail officials have not indicated which area of the jail the incident took place.
Theo Lacy Jail employees were initially concerned that other staff members were at risk. It was believed another assault was potentially imminent. This is why parts of the facility were locked down.
Those areas reportedly included two modules and three barracks. This restricted the movement of inmates detained in those areas. In addition, those affected had their visitation privileges restricted.
The OC Sheriff's Department said they expect that charges will be filed against the four detainees that participated in the June 22 attack. Their names have not yet been made public.
A representative from within the Theo Lacy Jail said additional precautions have been implemented. Several potentially hostile inmates have been moved. Previously seen tensions have seemed to cool.
Deputies are always encouraged to exercise caution, but it's hard to predict what will happen in a jail-type environment. The investigation as to the cause of the attack is ongoing.
