The man accused of shooting and killing eight people at a Seal Beach salon was pepper-sprayed and restrained by authorities at the Theo Lacy jail, where he is being held while awaiting trial. According to KTLA, Scott Dekraai became disruptive at the jail January 26, screamed and charged at jail guards.
In order to contain him, deputies at the jail teamed up with protective shields. After Dekraai began throwing things at the protective windows of the jail, officers fired pepper balls at Dekraai, according to the Orange County Register. He then charged towards the officers and was wrestled to the ground.
After he was subdued, Dekraai was removed from his one-man cell and sent to the medical ward of the Intake and Release Center in the main Santa Ana jail. While there, Dekraai will undergo mental evaluation and testing, the Register reported.
His public defender, Scott Sanders, said he was concerned that officials from the Orange County Sheriff's Department were leaking information of his client's mental health status to media outlets. Sanders was denied contact with his client after the incident at Theo Lacy and his transfer to the medical ward.
Dekraai is responsible for the October 2011 mass shooting at Salon Meritage. Eight people died in the massacre, including his ex-wife, Michelle Fournier. According to the Register, the incident was the deadliest shooting in Orange County history. Dekraai pleaded not guilty to eight counts of murder at his January 2012 indictment. If found guilty, Dekraai could face the death penalty.
No one, including Dekraai, was injured in the January 26 incident, the Register said.
