No Expansion For San Joaquin County Jail

The San Joaquin County Jail has turned down more than $80 million in state funding that would have enabled it to add more bed space.

A spokesperson for the detention facility said this decision is a complete reversal from a previous push to expand. Back then, it was believed that having the ability to house more criminals would help reduce instances of crime within the county.

The County Board of Supervisors has pointed out that adding the planned 1,280 beds would increase the jail's operating costs by more than $70 million each year.

The supervisors feel that money can be better spent. A spokesperson …

San Joaquin County Jail Expansion Still Being Considered

The county board of supervisors said that while they are still considering a measure which would allow for expansion of the San Joaquin County Jail a final decision has not yet been made.  The vote, they said, is expected to come in about two weeks.   The county was awarded $80 million in jail construction funds in 2008.   The plans to expand the jail, however, were on the table long before those monies were available.

The biggest concern is not construction costs, but the annual expense of running a larger facility.  It is estimated that operations costs could top $70 …

Former San Joaquin County Jail Inmate Praises Realignment

A former San Joaquin County Jail inmate has said he is thankful for the state's prisoner realignment program.  The man in question, Dustin Cahoon said he feels blessed to have the tools to allow him to be on the straight and narrow.

The realignment was implemented in late 2011.  It required certain populations of inmates be transferred from state prisons to county jails to serve out their sentences.  Local detention centers soon began bursting at the seams.  This has led many facilities throughout the state, including the San Joaquin County Jail to begin releasing local inmates early.  Although some of …

Officials at the San Joaquin County Jail have confirmed that medical costs at county detention centers have gone up markedly due to the state's inmate realignment program.  Many doctors and nurses say they are seeing many more patients now than in years past.  Some of the inmates are chronically ill.  All of these changes have led to an increase in the county's out of pocket expenses when it comes to providing medical care.

Jail staff have pointed out that county facilities were initially designed to detain inmates for up to a year.  Under the state's prisoner realignment program, under which …
