Contra Costa Jail Expansion Funds Bid Flies Out The Window

Easy come, easy go.

The Contra Costa jails had high hopes that state officials would approve their $80 million grant bid, but the project didn't get the green-light vote from Sacramento officials.

California had set aside $500 million in a Criminal Justice Facilities Construction fund earlier this year and just about every county in the state sought out a piece of that pie.

Some, like Orange County, fared better than others.  Their bid was approved on Thursday and the Board of Supervisors is expecting to accept the funds this July.   Fresno, San Mateo and Sacramento will also receive grant money.

Contra Costa Sheriff Looks To Expand Richmond Jail

A spokesperson for the Contra Costa Sheriff's Department has confirmed the county is seeking $80 million in state funding which would allow them to expand the Richmond.

If approved, the grant would increase the jail's square footage and will be used to construct a new wing.  Re-entry services would also be added.

Sheriff David Livingston told the County Board of Supervisors that the plan is all about maximizing public safety.   Being able to hold more inmates, he said, means safer streets and neighborhoods.  He's also hopeful to add programs focused on reducing recidivism rates.
