OC Sheriff Defends Use Of Jailhouse Informants

It wasn't all that long ago that OC defense attorneys had alleged that the county's use of jailhouse informants was a direct violation of their constitutional rights.

At that point, OC public defenders alleged that prosecutors were using sentenced inmates to interrogate pre-trial defendants and went so far as to claim the DA's office was hiding the inappropriate tactics.

But Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hurchens has stepped forward to defend the county prosecutor, saying that the use of jailhouse informants has been "very effective."

Orange County Cities See Major Drop In Violent Crime

Sources within the Orange County law enforcement community have confirmed that yes, violent crime rates throughout the region are down year-on-year.

The dip in some regions has been so significant that some cities are describing it as being "dramatic".

Nearly every area in the county has reported declines, according to a recent FBI report.  Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens said this can be largely attributed to federal, state and local law enforcement agencies working hand-in-hand.

Laguna Niguel Approves Multi-Million Police Contract

It's just another day, another law enforcement services contract for members of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

The most recent nod came earlier this week when the Laguna Niguel City Council agreed to keep the OCSD's current agreement in place.  But the biggest difference between this year and last, is the 8.45 percent services increase.

Ultimately, the city has agreed to pay more than $799,000 than it did last year.

Source close to city hall said that some of that is earmarked for a one-time equipment purchase.  Other portions of those funds will be used to help revamp an Aliso Viejo school …

People have all sorts of odd affinities when it comes to pizza toppings, but a chemical that sets your mouth, stomach and intestines on fire generally isn't one of them.

The holiday season is typically a giving time of year, but a flawed United Way donations policy that re-routed funds that should have been earmarked for the OC Sheriff's Department Advisory Council into their general pool has caused a massive uproar.

The Sheriff's Department Advisory Council provides funds for causes that aren't supported by the OCSD budget; families of officers who have been injured or killed in the line of duty are the most frequent beneficiaries.
