Contra Costa Sheriff Looks To Expand Richmond Jail

A spokesperson for the Contra Costa Sheriff's Department has confirmed the county is seeking $80 million in state funding which would allow them to expand the Richmond.

If approved, the grant would increase the jail's square footage and will be used to construct a new wing.  Re-entry services would also be added.

Sheriff David Livingston told the County Board of Supervisors that the plan is all about maximizing public safety.   Being able to hold more inmates, he said, means safer streets and neighborhoods.  He's also hopeful to add programs focused on reducing recidivism rates.

Dog Wash To Benefit SFPD K-9 Unit

A weekend dog wash that aims to raise $150,000 will donate all of its proceeds to help benefit canine units, including one within the SFPD.

The event will take place at Pet Food Express stores.  It serves a dual purpose- getting the stinky dog smell off your pet and helping provide much needed funds for law enforcement dogs.  The full cost of the wash will be donated.

The primary benefit organization is called the Police and Working K-9 Foundation.  The Foundation provides funding to a number of local units, including those at the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department and the SFPD.

California Jail Realignment Leads To Longer Parole Sentences

Contra Costa Jail officials have confirmed that a bill which would allow for inmates to be sentenced to longer parole terms is moving forward through the state legislature.  The bill was carried by Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla.

If passed, it would allow county parole boards to assign inmates three year parole terms.   This would extend the current monitoring time by 12 months.  The bill has already been approved by the Assembly and has moved to the Senate.

Contra Costa Sheriffs Considered For Patrols In Hercules

A representative from the Contra Costa Sheriff's Department has confirmed they are being considered as a provider of Hercules police department services.  A city representative said a tax measure is on the June 4 ballot.  If the tax increase is not approved they will likely need to disband their full time department and hire a contract law enforcement provider.  Elected officials said that if this happens. residents should expect to see little or no change to the type of service they are receiving now.

Contra Costa Sheriff’s Lt To Lead Orinda PD

A Contra Costa Sheriff's Department Lt. has been tapped as the new Chief of the Orinda Police Department.  Current Chief Jeff Jennings announced he will be leaving the post to take a position with a different department.  Lt. Scott Haggard took over the role late last week.

Martinez Jail Inmate Death Ruled Accidential

The Contra Costa County coroner has confirmed the sheriff's department is not responsible for the death of a Martinez Jail inmate.  Defendant Donald McCullough was taken into custody late last fall and was charged with burglary.  Deputies said they needed to use a Tazer to subdue the defendant after he arrived at the jail.   McCullough died several hours later.  It had been speculated that the use of the Tazer may have led to his death.

Contra Costa Sheriff’s Deputy Flips Patrol Car

Authorities have confirmed that the Contra Costa Sheriff's Department deputy who flipped his car during a patrol in Richmond has not sustained major injuries.  The incident took place earlier this week while the deputy was en-route to a call.  Dispatchers have not indicated the nature of the call or the area from which it originated.

The deputy has not been identified.  Contra Costa Sheriff's Department officials say he was driving along San Pablo Avenue at about 11:50pm. He approached an intersection and took note of a truck that was doing the same.  The deputy reportedly attempted to swerve in order …
