It's hard to imagine, but it's true.

The Seal Beach Jail has recently upgraded a handful of cells. They are now outfitted with new beds, flat-screen televisions and other luxuries that inmates aren't usually afforded.

If you're interested in booking a stay at the detention center, it comes with a catch.  The first being that you need to have been sentenced to serve some time.  The second relates to cost-  because those who prefer to be housed in one of the luxury suites will need to pay for the privilege.

Jail officials say they will charge pre-selected inmates between $100 and $120 per day.  That fee will not only get them an upgraded room, it will also allow them access to work release programs, a computer room and media room.

Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis, and not all applicants will be awarded a golden ticket.

Pay-t0-stay isn't a new concept.  Jails throughout California have been offering this program for months as a means of generating revenue.  Those enrolled in the program are typically low-level offenders who have been sentenced to serve less than two weeks behind bars.

The Seal Beach Jail, though, said that anyone who needs to serve less than 12-months time can apply.

County jail stays are free, but don't come with a lot of perks.  These inmate populations can also be far more dangerous than those you'd find at a smaller police department facility.

This is where pay-to-stay comes in.

A city spokesperson reportedly said they expect the program will rake in about $400,000 during the upcoming fiscal year.  Those funds will be used to help offset department expenses, including those incurred due to street arrests.

The jail said they have room to hold up to 30 offenders at any given time.   Those interested in the program are encouraged to visit the Seal Beach Jail website for more information.
