Each year, police officers across the nation get ready for the Super Bowl by making sure there are enough officers to patrol their communities. Whether or not people are getting together to support a team or not, it is more than likely alcohol will be involved. On February 3, officers with the Orange County Sheriff's Department and other local law enforcement agencies arrested a significant number of people for drinking and driving. According to a sheriff's department statement, officers arrested 43 individuals for being under the influence of alcohol or drugs while they were operating their vehicles. Although there weren't any deaths reported, officers are still taking the arrests seriously.
In order to keep drunk drivers of the road, Orange County created the "Avoid the 38" campaign in 2009. The campaign was launched to urge residents in the community to report if they saw anyone swerving, speeding or driving erratically to the police. The officers have maintained a strong presence in their attempts to stop the crime from taking place, and the Super Bowl arrests are a prime example of that.
The OCSD will also be gearing up for other community events to attempt to stop people from drinking and driving. Officers throughout the community will be present during St. Patrick's Day festivities in March. The funding for the anti-DUI program Avoid the 38 comes from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. During that weekend the sherrif's department encourages motorists to report any suspicious activity. Statistical data for the number of crashes and arrests will be released the following day, according to the department.
