Law enforcement officials raided several homes of people they suspected to be involved in a street gang in August, resulting in 33 arrests and the confiscation of drugs, weapons and money. According to The Orange County Register, police had been investigating the gang since June of last year and the gang garnered national attention after two local police officers were shot in one weekend.
Police began to enter the suspects' homes at 4:30 a.m., and upon entry, they seized 40 weapons and 11 pounds of crystal methamphetamine. The gang, the Eastside Anaheim, is reported to be one of the city's oldest. Most of the arrests took place in Orange County but some individuals were arrested in Los Angeles County, according to the Register.
After the arrests, the police placed fliers across affected neighborhoods in Spanish and English to let residents know about the situation. Police Chief John Welter said the arrests were "crippling" to the gang, but he is looking forward to the community being rebuilt so it can be more family oriented.
"We're all after the same thing: having neighborhoods where families can grow up without being [influenced] by gangs," Welter said. "[These arrests] are a first stop toward some real recovery in some of our troubled neighborhoods."
Despite Welter's assertion, some residents of the area told the Register they think the arrests were retaliation for protests regarding the fatal July shooting by police of a local man.
Gang violence isn't an uncommon issue in the United States, and it has become prevalent in big cities across the country. According to Helping Gang Youth, it is estimated that there are 24,500 gangs in the United States. Of their membership, the group says 40 percent of members are under 18 and 60 percent are adults. The organization also posted statistics showing that gang activity is present in every U.S. city with a population of at least 250,000.
Possessing a gun in California can result in extremely serious charges that often carry years' worth of jail time. After people are arrested, if they get into contact with a California bail bondsman, they can be released within two to 24 hours. Choosing to obtain Orange County bail bonds can reduce a great deal of stress that may come with the situation and leave more time to figure out the next step.
