A man is being held at the Santa Ana Jail after being caught attempting to steal copper wiring from the roof of a local church, ABC reported.
The 35-year-old man, Jeffery Alan Lawing, was arrested by Santa Ana police officers after the department received a call about someone on the roof of the Santa Ana Restoration Church at around 12:35 a.m. on October 11.
The police department used the help of a helicopter from Orange County Air Support to locate Lawing, who was hiding under an air conditioning unit on the roof, the ABC article stated.
By the time police officers arrived on the scene, the church's electricity had gone out, the Orange County Register reported. Officers were able to climb onto the roof and arrest Lawing. He is being held in jail on suspicion of grand theft and possession of burglary tools.
Investigators say they believe Lawing was attempting to steal a "significant amount" of copper wiring from the church, and are looking into whether the man has been involved in any other wiring thefts, according to the OC Register.
