A man involved in a five-hour standoff with police was arrested February 6 and taken to the Orange County Jail. According to the Orange County Register, Edward Uribe was charged with three felony counts and three misdemeanors.
Charges include possession of a firearm, prohibited possession of ammunition, possession of methamphetamine, transporting a controlled substance to jail, resisting or obstructing a peace officer and being under the influence of methamphetamine, the Register reported.
The standoff began after Uribe crashed his Mustang into five cars. When the suspect told a witness Uribe had a gun in the car, police were alerted. When officers reportedly asked him to exit his vehicle, Uribe wouldn't comply. Police then fired a round and struck his vehicle, leaving Uribe unharmed.
The Register reported Uribe told police that his car would explode if he were to open the door and get out. Police proceeded to alert residents to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in case Uribe was wired with explosives.
Nearly five hours later, around 9 p.m., police threw canisters of tear gas into the vehicle. Uribe did not emerge until 30 minutes later when he stumbled to the sidewalk after exiting the passenger side of the Mustang. After exiting, he was taken into custody and later transported to Mission Hospital Laguna Beach for exposure to tear gas. He was then transported to the Orange County Jail where he is being held on $50,000 bail.
City News Service reported the Orange County Sheriff's Department bomb squad was called to the scene of the standoff. The article stated after Uribe was arrested, officers retrieved a .22-caliber handgun from the vehicle.
