An inmate at the Theo Lacy Jail in Orange County was seriously injured in a recent attack inside the facility. The Orange County Register reported the inmate, a 28-year-old man, had a large cut across his throat after the attack in a medium-security module of the jail while inmates were eating dinner.
The injury was serious, but not life-threatening, Jim Amormino, spokesperson for the Orange County Sheriff's Department told the source. He was taken to Western Medical Center - Santa Ana.
Sheriff deputies have not been able to find the stabbing weapon used in the jail attack, the article stated. After the incident, however, all inmates were ordered back into their cells and order was "restored immediately," Amormino told the source.
The name of the stabbing suspect has not been released, nor was the motive of the attack immediately known. However, officials did say he was being held at the jail on burglary charges. Investigators do not believe the attack was gang or racially motivated.
The Theo Lacy jail can hold up to 3,111 inmates, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department's website. It is classified as a maximum security facility. Inmates are housed depending on their history of imprisonment, the current charges against them, as well as a number of other indicators.
"The purpose of the classification system is to minimize the risks to inmates and staff while maximizing the smooth and orderly operation of daily activities," the website stated. "The classification of inmates is continually evaluated and inmates who are not adjusting to their environment are often re-classified to minimize potential problems."
