San Diego Police Department honors women for their work

Three female San Diego Police Department officers were recognized for their outstanding work at the third annual Women in Blue San Diego Police Foundation luncheon on March 13. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, San Diego police Capt. Lori Luhnow, police supervising crime analyst Karen Goodman and child abuse investigations expert Donna Pence were each honored at the event by their colleagues. The three women have a combined 85 years of service to the San Diego community.

The San Diego Police Foundation's website stated that the Women in Blue event raised more than $20,000 last year, which the organization uses to strengthen the community and make it safer.

$100,000 bail bond set for Orange County man

A man in Orange County was driving drunk at a high rate of speed when he allegedly killed his brother and injured his nephew. According to the Orange County District Attorney's office, Felix Jacobo Brito is charged with one felony count of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated without gross negligence.

He is also charged with a felony count of driving under the influence and causing bodily injury as well as a misdemeanor of driving a motor vehicle without a valid license.

San Diego Police Department create campaign to encourage pedestrian safety

Six people in San Diego have been fatally hit by cars while crossing the street since the start of 2013. In an attempt to reduce the number of fatal accidents in the future, the San Diego Police Department recently launched a campaign urging pedestrians and residents to be as safe and not jaywalk, according to Fox affiliate KSWB. San Diego Police Department Lt. Steve Hutchinson told the source the department will have 42 of its units patrolling the city to enforce the anti-jaywalking campaign. In addition, officers will be arresting and citing any jaywalkers who are flagrant in their actions.

Torrance Police Department arrests four suspected robbers

Authorities from the Torrance Police Department arrested four suspected robbers after a three-month investigation. According to the police department, the suspects stole women's clothing and accessories from local retail stores. It is believed the suspects hid the stolen goods under their clothing before walking out of the store.​

The four suspects are between the ages of 20 and 26 and were identified as Javon Zachery​ and Reginald Wilson from Compton, Dean Hampton from Lynwoodand Avion Speed from Bellflower. Torrance police said they were able to connect them to 16 burglaries in Torrance and more than 50 burglaries in Los Angeles County.

$1 million bail bond set for yacht thieves

Three individuals who were arrested after they stole a yacht and hosted a party aboard the boat are being held in lieu of a $1.01 million bail bond. According to Mercury News, the three suspects stole an 82-foot Oyster Marine 82 luxury yacht named Darling.

The suspects were eventually arrested and identified as Leslie Gardner of Wyoming and Dario Mira and Lisa Modawell of Aptos, California. Mercury News reported the yacht is valued at more than $1 million and is the reason for the high bail. The three suspects are being held on suspicion of boat theft.

San Diego Police Department Lt. Paul Rorrison​ is back on the job after he was injured while chasing a suspect near Interstate 805 and El Cajon Boulevard on March 8. According to San Diego ABC affiliate KGTV, Rorrison said he and other officers were chasing a group of people in a white Infiniti sedan after he received word that the individuals might have been involved in narcotics activity in the area. After leading the officers on a high-speed chase that lasted nearly seven miles, the driver of the vehicle crashed the car on the Lake Murray Boulevard offramp while attempting to exit Interstate 8.

Redwood City Police Department arrest robbery suspects

Authorities from the Redwood City Police Department were able to find the two suspects in connection with a home robbery in February. According to Bay City News Service, 21-year-old Luis Trujillo and his 17-year-old female accomplice were arrested in Mexico February 27.

Police tracked the suspects to Mexicali where they were eventually arrested by Mexican authorities. The article stated they were transported to the U.S. border, given over to law enforcement officials from the United States and taken into custody.

As the San Diego Police Department continues its attempt at cracking down on pedestrian fatalities and citations, they haven't had the most positive results. According to San Diego ABC affiliate KGTV, a 58-year old man was sent to a San Diego hospital after he was struck by a pickup truck on March 9 at 54th Street and Westover Place.

Contra Costa Jails Reconsider Holding ICE Detainees

A recent study indicates that Contra Costa jails have deported more undocumented inmates than its other Bay Area counterparts.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) documents show that Alameda, Napa and Sonoma counties all boast lower numbers.  At the same time, they continue to remain aggressive in removing illegal aliens.   Current regulations require county jails submit fingerprints of new arrestees to the Department of Homeland Security in order to verify their citizenship.   If it is determined the defendant is in the country illegally, ICE will place a hold on them which disallows a friend or family member to bond that person out.   Those detainers are …

San Diego Police Department arrests shooting suspects

A 40-year-old man was wounded in Valencia Park after a possible gang-related shooting on March 7. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, officers from the San Diego Police Department arrested two men the following day connected to the shooting.

The victim was attempting to get into his car when he was shot on San Alberto Way at approximately 9:45 p.m. Police told the Union Tribune the two men then approached the man and fired several shots using a handgun. The victim of the incident suffered gun shot wounds to his lower torso.
