Monterey County Sheriff Talks About Recent Inmate Deaths, Jail Safety

Attorneys allege the jail is at fault for not providing timely medical care
Two Monterey County Jail inmates died earlier this month after not receiving prompt medical attention for what's been described as flu-like symptoms.

David Stevens, 58, was reportedly taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to the illness within the week.   The family attorney said Stevens told him he'd filled out several slips requesting to see a jail doctor.

Two weeks later, 33 year-old Jacob Parenti also died after not receiving prompt treatment.  His sister said his condition had gotten so bad that he'd started to cough up …

OC Undersheriff To Lead Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department

When LASD Sheriff Lee Baca announced his retirement, John Scott wasn't on his short-list of interim replacements.  Baca was hopeful Assistant Sheriff Terri McDonald would get the job.

But once the LA County Board of Supervisors learned she lacked the proper credentials, they set their sights on someone else.

That search, according a source within that office, led them south of the county line, right to the doorstep of Orange County Undersheriff John Scott.

Scott is no stranger to the LASD.   In fact, he served as the department’s chief of custody operations for a number of years before making the move to …

LAPD Officers Being Trained To Use Gunshot Wound Trauma Kits

LAPD Officers Being Trained To Use Gunshot Wound Trauma Kits

In a day and age where mass shooting incidents are becoming more and more common, the LAPD wants its officers to be prepared.

Officers are often the first ones to the scene, they said, and if an adult or a minor child is in need of medical attention, there's a chance paramedics won't be able to treat them until the area is secured.

This is why officers are being trained to use combat-style trauma kits.

These kits will not only contain your every day first aid items; they will also include things such as tourniquets and compression bandages, which are used to …

Oakland PD Reports Turnaround In Crime

The Oakland Police Department had a rocky start in 2013.

Crime was up, staffing was down and citizens were still at odds with local officers due to events that took place during the Occupy protest movement.

Elected officials hired outside consultants in hopes of finding a way to overhaul police department operations, and from there, they re-opened the long-closed police academy.

The Chief of Police stepped away from his position a few short weeks later, and a temporary-leader stepped up to fill the role.  Sources within the Oakland PD point out this man was the fourth person to serve in this position …

OCSD Deputy Gets Probation For Pepper Spray On Pizza
People have all sorts of odd affinities when it comes to pizza toppings, but a chemical that sets your mouth, stomach and intestines on fire generally isn't one of them.

Last summer, Orange County Sheriff's Department deputy Juan Tavera chose to douse a teenager's pizza with pepper spray during a routine traffic stop.  The pie was in the back seat of the car when the event took place, the victim said, and it wasn't until he got home, dug in and his mouth started burning that he realized something was wrong.

The teen …

Abuse 911 Go To Jail

We are lucky to have a system in place that allows us to get into contact with emergency services when we are encountering a serious problem. Things like robberies, domestic violence, and medical emergencies happen every day.

Being able to dial 9-1-1 brings us the people we need to help out during these emergency situations.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who have not been equipped with the ability to understand the difference between an emergency and something that is just a nuisance. Or an imaginary problem.

Since people abuse the 9-1-1 system, laws are in place to deal with those …

State Greenlights $80M Grant For Musick Jail Expansion

There are a lot of people who don't want to see an expansion at the Musick Jail.   A California state board, however, is not among them.

As of late last week, they'd approved an $80 million construction grant, which will be used to add bed space, create therapy rooms and focus on rehabilitation efforts.   Classroom space and additional dorms will also be built.

The city of Irvine has been trying to block construction for as long as its been talked about.  They've taken a "not in my backyard", approach, saying that adding medium and maximum security inmates to the jail is …

Nutty But True: Grand Theft Walnut

San Joaquin Police Arrest Two For Stealing $400,000 in Walnuts
It seems a little nutty at first, but it's true.

San Joaquin Sheriff's Department officials have confirmed that two area residents have been arrested and booked for grand theft walnut.

A judge issued arrest warrant for Pedro Becerra and Mario Oheda after an investigation showed they may be responsible for pilfering more than $400,000 of the hard-shelled snacks from a local orchard.

Police further believe one of the now defendants is responsible for the theft of two tankers from the city of Modesto.

So how did they pull off the crime to begin with?  …

Contra Costa Jail Expansion Funds Bid Flies Out The Window

Easy come, easy go.

The Contra Costa jails had high hopes that state officials would approve their $80 million grant bid, but the project didn't get the green-light vote from Sacramento officials.

California had set aside $500 million in a Criminal Justice Facilities Construction fund earlier this year and just about every county in the state sought out a piece of that pie.

Some, like Orange County, fared better than others.  Their bid was approved on Thursday and the Board of Supervisors is expecting to accept the funds this July.   Fresno, San Mateo and Sacramento will also receive grant money.

Had the Contra …

SDPD Offers Residents Virtual Ride Along
It's known as a "ride-along" -- when ordinary citizens spend a few hours with a police officer in the patrol car simply observing what happens.

If you talk to someone who's been on a ride-along, most will tell you it's fairly interesting, from the gadgets inside of the car to the calls the officer goes on.

Well, the San Diego Police Department is innovating the ride-along.

The San Diego Police Department last week hosted it's first virtual ride-along giving the world a birds-eye view into the day of an officer via Twitter.

The Tweet-Along, as they called it, …
