LAPD Combats Burglaries Via Zombie Apocalypse

Members of the Los Angeles Police Department say they are committed to training to combat crime, even if it means creating a zombie apocalypse.

The LAPD Northeast Division has recently produced a training video in which a mob of electronics-hungry zombies terrorize the streets as they smash-and-grab items from cars.

These walking dead aren't after brains, according to department sources, but are instead hankering to steal iPhones, iPads and any other high-ticket item they can get their decaying hands on.

When LAPD officers arrive on the scene they're stoked to be able to take out the undead.  Instead of grabbing for their …

What Not To Do: Fast Food Worker Goes To Jail After Spitting On A Cop’s Sandwhich

What Not To Do: Fast Food Worker Goes To Jail After Spitting On A Cop’s Sandwhich

You would think something like this would fall into the category of common sense.

However, one 24-year old former fast food worker needed to learn his lesson the hard way.  It all started during the summer of 2012 when former McDonald's employee Dalton Urselean decided to spit in the sandwich of an on-duty officer.

Police reports have not indicated what prompted the oral assault, nor did they say how the officer came to learn of the offense.

Either way, the  policeman said he didn't order a side of spittle with his meal.

Court records reportedly show that Urselean submitted to a blood pathogen …

Typhoon Offers Swim To Freedom

Philippine jailers never planned on adding an Olympic-sized swimming pool to the local detention center.

Unfortunately, the recent super typhoon not only took countless neighborhoods, it also smashed through the prison's main gate and flooded the premises.  This is bad news for corrections officers, who say that after the storm stuck, nearly 120 inmates swam their way to freedom.

Staff members said that as the tide began to rise, they were left with no other option than to allow inmates out of their cells in order to swim to higher ground.

Some took the honest option and fled to higher floors.  Others …

Former SDPD Headquarters Reopens As Retail Mecca

The former SDPD headquarters had been shuttered for nearly 17 years.  Now, through the creative visions of developers, the facility has been reopened and re-purposed into a retail wonderland.

Today, the emporium features San Diego-local storefronts, open spaces and a variety of top-notch restaurants.

Some tenants felt the opportunity to rent space in the historic building was too good an opportunity to pass up.  They saw the still-wavering economy as a solid bargaining chip when it came to negotiating the terms of their lease.

On the flip side of that coin, the competition pool was strong enough that it allowed landlords to …

Chula Vista PD To Start Using Facial Recognition Software

Members of the Chula Vista Police Department have confirmed that they, along with other law enforcement agencies throughout the county, have started to use facial recognition technology to help them catch criminals.

In years past, photo identification cards were often the first employed tactic when it comes to determining a person's identity while in the field.  That methodology has become increasingly flawed, especially now that lawbreakers have become quite adept in producing fake ID cards.

The solution to that, they say, is the employment of biometric technology.  Biometric technology has long been used by the Department of Homeland Security, but it's …

How Will Jails Deal With Inmates Who Can Live For 500 Years?

How Will Jails Deal With Inmates Who Can Live For 500 Years?

Jails think they're overcrowded now.  Just wait until scientists get us to a point where people can live for centuries.

So how will this change things moving forward?  On one hand, it puts the phrase "life in prison" into a whole new light. On the other hand, you can't help but wonder:  if someone is set to be locked up for a hundred years, is that enough time to rehabilitate them?

Or will prisoners be denied access to medical treatments and supplements that will help them extend their lives?

If a person doesn't age they will have had to be enhanced in …

A Day In The Life Of A Stockton PD Recruit

It's not often that you get a behind-the-scenes look into the life of a Stockton Police Department recruit.

Earlier this month, one courageous man decided to share his story.  His first day started off with some paperwork.  Much to no one's surprise, he was asked to sign a waiver.   This, he said, exempted the department from liability should he become injured during his training.

The training would not be easy.  Getting through the orientation would be the easy part.  Passing the physical fitness component and scoring well on the gun range would be a different story.

Later, the men and women were …

Crimes & Jail Time

Canada is often thought of as a gentle place where crimes are rare and the people are constantly friendly and cheerful.

The country does, however, have its share of the criminal element in its midst.

Between 2009 and 2010, there were more than 262,000 adult criminal court cases in Canada.

In this infographic you can see a breakdown of the types of offenses that were committed and what percentage of the convicted offenders were sent to jail and to other forms of punishment.

The Good, Bad And Ugly Of CA’s Prisoner Realignment

It's been two years since Sacramento legislators implemented the CA prison realignment, and jails are still struggling to adapt to "the new normal".

It all started after a federal lawsuit alleged that conditions in state prisons were so overcrowded that inmates basic constitutional rights were being violated.   Judges agreed, and ordered the corrections department trim populations to more than 137.5% of rated capacity.

Since opening the doors and letting criminals free just wasn't an option, elected officials reportedly came up with a different plan.  Pass the buck to county jails.

Some have called the plan a necessary evil.  Others have equated it …

LASD Deputies Found Liable In Jail Beating

The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department has once again found itself in hot water.

Last week, a seven person jury found several LASD deputies liable for using excessive force. The case was filed in response to a 2008 incident that took place at the downtown Men's Central Jail.

At the time the incident took place, the accused are said to have called inmates out of their cells in order to have them searched for weapons and other contraband.  For unknown reasons, 21 detainees refused.

From there, the LASD deputies Tazed and beat them until they lost consciousness.   A total of nineteen men sustained …
