Los Angeles Sheriffs Race Heats Up At First Debate

Los Angeles Sheriffs Race Heats Up At First Debate

A total of seven men are vying for the job formerly held by now-retired LASD Sheriff Lee Baca, and each is making a strong case as to why they're the best one to lead the department.

The first debate took place last week, and the six attending candidates had strong opinions as to who was responsible for department mismanagement and who would best help the LASD recover from a recent flurry of scandals.

The resonant tone for the night seemed to be one of reform-  why it's needed and why each one felt they were the most qualified man for the …

Jail Violence, Budget Talks And County Roads

Jail funding -vs- road funding goes head to head
The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors point out they don't have unlimited funds.  Next month, however, they'll come together with county officials to hammer out next year's fiscal budget.

Department heads will make their respective cases next month, they said, and among those topics will be how the county is going to pay for increased jail operations cost once the new detention center opens its doors.

Construction at the North County facility isn't due to complete until 2018, but it's expected the annual cost to run that jail will be more than …

California Counties Undermine State Plan to Reduce Prison Crowding

Mandate to Decrease Population
Legislation was passed nearly three years ago in California by Gov. Jerry Brown to bring a sharp decrease in the state prison overcrowding.

The plan was to keep more low-level inmates in county jails for longer periods and saving space in state prisons for violent and sexual offenders. A surge in the number of people being sentenced to serve prison time since the legislation passed has confounded the efforts of the state.

When the law first passed, the prison inmate population was reduced by approximately 25,000. Almost the level required by federal judges in 2011. Those judges believed …

Jail Inmates Signing Up For Obamacare

Proponents of the Affordable Care Act say it really is available to everyone
When the Obama administration rolled out their national healthcare plan they probably didn't know large numbers of inmates could be signing up.

Jails, though, feel it's a win-win.  Not only does it allow them to save money on health care costs, they're hoping it will cut recidivism rates.

Statistics show that a large percentage of people who are sentenced to serve time wind up back behind bars, and many of those crimes relate to things like mental health issues, drug abuse and in some cases, people who get arrested …

City Rejects Measure To Increase San Jose Police Spending

A lone City Councilman who wanted to increase police spending by 25 percent has had his plan rejected.

The idea was simple- reallocate part of the city's budget to provide additional funding to the San Jose Police Department.  As it stands, the city allocates 30 percent of their annual budget to public safety.

Had the plan been approved, this would have increased to 40 percent.

Although no one will argue that public safety is important, the mayor, other council members and city residents reportedly say the reallocation would have been disastrous.

Some pointed out that libraries would have needed to close.  Others say …

Several Northern California law enforcement agencies have been connected to StingRay technology- a device used to assist law enforcement officials in tracking people and collecting data from cell phones within a set radius.

While none of the agencies that have been found to have a connection to this technology, records show that there are at least seven agencies in Northern California that do have the technology. Two other departments were approved for grants to purchase the technology this year.

Mounted Police Used To Chase Down Pimps

Mounted patrol pimp sweep helps clean up Compton
It's probably safe to say a crop of recently arrested Compton pimps never thought they'd be chased down by cops on horseback- but it happened.

Sure, there are many officers who prefer to patrol their beats in cars, on motorcycles and even on segway scooters, but others say riding a horse suits them just fine.

Although some will argue the practice is a little bit dated, others point out that mounted patrol units have their advantages.
Old-school policing models have value
Los Angeles Sheriff's Department deputies point out that horses can do things that motorcycles and …
