At this point, you've probably heard at least one story about a criminal making a dumb mistake that lands them in jail.

When a man decides to get the word "MURDER" tattooed across his neck, even backwards, in big block letters, it's bound to raise some eyebrows -  especially when find himself on trial for murder.
And that's the situation with a Kansas man was arrested on first-degree murder charges.

Court documents show Jeffrey Chapman was arrested in late 2011 after Damon Galliart's body was found in a ditch.  The defendant has been in custody since then and like many such defendants has not been successful in posting a bail bond.

A glitch in nearly 300 handguns caused quite a stir at the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department after they needed to call in aid from other local agencies while they sorted the issue out.

Representatives from the sheriff's department confirmed a recent purchase of about 300 handguns, all of which turned out to be defective.  It wasn't until they started testing them out at a local firing range, that deputies learned there was a problem.

Ultimately, a glitch in their design meant the firing mechanism turned out to be faulty.

Leadership within the Los Angeles Police Department last week gathered to celebrate the lives of the more than 200 LAPD officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Those men and women, they said, served in different time periods throughout the departments 145+ year history.

LA Mayor Eric Garcetti said the ceremony touched home, especially in light of the deaths of three officers who recently lost their lives in traffic accidents.

When Shoplifters Bite Back…

If you were a security guard at a national retail chain and you crossed paths with a customer looking to gain a five-finger discount, you'd likely start barking out orders-- something along the lines of "stop!" or "thief!" or "put your hands where I can see them!"

And that's exactly what happened last week, when local Wal-Mart employees stumbled across a transient who was trying to make off with some loot.

Stanislaus Jail Employees Want To Carry Concealed Weapons Sans Permits

For the most part, if a county allows residents to carry a concealed weapon, they'll need to go through a permitting process.

Stanislaus County Jail guards, however, feel they should be exempt from this rule.

A spokesperson said it's not like they're asking for special consideration.  State prison guards don't have to fill out stacks of paperwork and pay permitting fees, and neither do patrol deputies.

Sheriff's corrections deputies say they're simply asking for a level playing field.

$15K Worth of Kindness of a Stranger

It's hard to imagine that anyone would put up $15,000 cold, hard cash of their own money to help get a total stranger out of jail.

But that's exactly what happened late last week, when Jennifer Bartley saw 25-year old Calvin Wilkes being taken into custody.

She's described the event as being one of the worst things she had ever seen.

Wilkes and two others were arrested last Thursday for allegedly  causing a disturbance near the Light Street pavilion.  Officers said they refused to leave, and that's when things got heated.

LAPD Improves Efficency By Working Smarter

Once a week, the leadership within the Los Angeles Police Department gets together to review crime trends, analyize statistics and to discuss strategies to improve performance.

During a recent meeting,  they reported homicides were down, but the instances of shots being fired and the number of aggravated assaults had climbed month-on-month.
