An 18-year-old suspected of murder will appear in Orange County court on March 22 to set a date for his jury trial. Reda Hassan Safieddine was arrested by police after allegedly shooting 17-year-old Valle Valeriano on August 13, 2012. Before the shooting, the two were allegedly arguing in a residential neighborhood in Fountain Valley, according to Fountain Valley Patch.
After posting his $1 million bail bond, Safieddine has remained out of jail.
Within the next few months, California lawmakers will be determining new ways to crack down on gun laws in order to avoid situations like Safieddine's. According to The Associated Press, the state's lawmakers said they are looking to regain the title of having the strictest gun laws in the country.
The decision was announced after New York stepped up to pass its own set of gun laws, which were done in response mainly for the Connecticut school massacre last December. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa stated he would like California to be in the lead regarding gun laws sooner than later. Some of the measures the lawmakers are looking to take is outlawing the future sale of semi-automatic rifles with detachable magazines, which would prevent quick reloading since the bullets would have to be loaded one at a time, The Associated Press reported.
Sam Paredes, executive director of Gun Owners of California, stated that if the new legislation passes, he and his organization's supporters will protest against the decision.
"It strikes me as if these folks are playing some sort of game of one-upsmanship with New York at the expense of law-abiding citizens, and that's just unconscionable," he said.
