In response to the recent shootings across the country, several communities in California are offering "active shooter" training for business owners and operators. The training will help prepare people how to deal and respond when a shooting occurs. The Santa Ana Police Department is among those offering the free training sessions, according to the Orange County Register.
The class is free and takes place from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on January 15 in the Police Community Room of the 60 Civic Center Plaza, the article stated. It is being sponsored by the Santa Ana Police Department and the Santa Ana Police Foundation. Interested participants can sign up online at the police department's website.
A recent two-day active shooter training session also recently took place at San Diego State's campus. A trainer from the Texas-based Response Options played the role of a heavily armed killer, shooting airsoft guns to make the situation seem as real as possible, the Los Angeles Times reported. Future, 90-minute training sessions on shootings will be mandatory for incoming freshman come the fall, the article stated. Student will learn how to survive an on-campus shooting.
University of California campuses Davis and Sacramento will also receive training on how to deal with a campus shooting, The California Aggie reported. The UC Davis Police Department will provide the presentations later in January. The police department has regularly held active shooter survival workshops to help students and other members of the community increase their chances of surviving an event like a school shooting.
“Our goal through crime prevention is to provide our campus community with as much information as possible,” UCDPD Police Chief Matthew Carmichael told the source. “We are continuously reviewing our protocols.”
