A man believed to be responsible for beating a 20-year-old man after a party, sending him into a coma and causing permanent brain damage, has been booked at the Santa Ana Jail. Alfonso Calderon was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. His bail has been set for $25,000, the Orange County Register Reported.

The alleged beating took place after police broke up a party in Santa Ana around 12:30 a.m. on September 30. KTLA News reported that the party was held at a clothing store on Orange Avenue in Santa Ana. Currie had been helping a friend deejay for the event.

People from the party filled a nearby parking lot, the Register article stated, where the 21-year-old Calderon and victim Ted Currie reportedly got into an argument. Police say Currie was attacked, fell and hit his head on the pavement, and Calderon continued to kick and punch him. Detective Andy Alvarez, of the Santa Ana Police Department, told the news source that there were up to five people kicking Currie in the head and chest as he lay on the ground.

Currie suffered brain bleeding, two skull fractures, a broken nose and a broken eye socket, the article stated. He was in a coma for four days. He has since been released from the hospital, but doctors are not sure if he will make a full recovery.

"He is highly confused to the point where he'll never be able to ride a skateboard or drive a car," said Tina Aldatz, a spokeswoman for the Currie family, according to the Register. "He has to be supervised 24 hours a day."

Authorities believe Calderon is the main suspect in the beating, but is asking for tips to aid the investigation.
