A former Orange County police officer charged with involuntary manslaughter for the beating death of a mentally ill homeless man last year will have a hearing in Orange County November 30, at which a trial date will be scheduled. Joe Wolfe is the third former police officer to be linked to the crime, the Orange County Register reported.

A video of the attack allegedly shows Wolfe as the first officer to strike transient Kelly Thomas, the article stated. Southern California Public Radio Station KPCC reported a total of six police officers beat up the homeless man, who died several days later. The surveillance video appears to show Wolfe using his baton to hit Thomas' leg while other officers hold the man to the ground.

Wolfe has pleaded not guilty to his felony charge and an additional count of the use of excessive force. Manuel Ramos, who is charged with second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter, is the first officer in Orange County to be accused of murder for an incident occurring on duty and in uniform, the Register reported.

Ramos and former officer Jay Cicinelli, who is charged with involuntary manslaughter and assault under color of authority for the crime, have both posted bail and will also have a November 30 hearing, the article stated.
