Sheriff Says Cost To Build New Santa Barbara Jail Is Hard To Estimate

The County Board of Supervisor may have given Sheriff Bill Brown the green light to collect $39 million in state grant funding that's been earmarked to help with an expansion at the Santa Barbara County Jail, Brown says it's still too soon to predict just how much that project will cost.

As it stands, he's tossed out what he calls a "best estimate" in terms of what operational, staffing and other related costs will look like.

But there's no guarantee that figure won't change in the future.

The expansion, which will be geared toward reducing recividism, will provide transitional housing for nearly …

Getting Zen Behind Bars

In the Netflix series Orange is the new Black, a handful of inmates flock to a free yoga class that's led by a California hippie who is serving some time.

And now, at the Santa Barbara County Jail, it would seem that life has started to imitate cinematic art.

The Prison Yoga Project was kicked off about two years ago by a local certified yoga instructor.  And for an hour each week, class participants are given a chance to mentally escape from their confines.

The instructor, Ginny Kunh, has been practicing yoga for more than two decades, she said, although it wasn't …

Another day, another plot twist.

The pair initially found themselves in hot water after they were arrested and charged with squatting after they were found living inside a home they sold 12 months prior.

They were taken into custody by members of the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Department but were eventually released on a pair of $50,000 …

Out-of-Hand College Party Leads To 100 Arrests

A spokesperson for the Santa Barbara County Jail has confirmed they booked nearly 100 people into the system last weekend after a weekend college party got out of hand.

Although police aren't sure what prompted the display of violence, what they do know is that by the end of it, many people were throwing rocks and beer bottles at one another.

The annual spring break party, otherwise known as Deltopia, was attended by about 15,000 people, according to a spokesperson for the sheriff's department.

But it wasn't until a campus police officer got smacked in the face by a backpack containing several …

Santa Barbara Jails Still Working Through Late-Night Release Problems

Santa Barbara Jails Still Working Through Late-Night Release Problems

A spokesperson for the Santa Barbara County Jail said the facility understands they still have quite a few hurdles to overcome when it comes to the late-night release of inmates.

The challenge, according to officials, is that public transportation doesn't run 24-hours a day, which means persons released after-hours often face a very long, and in some cases, very cold walk to town.

At current, the facility has spent about $12,000 to build 11 temporary holding cells within the jail transportation corridor, and they intend to start using them next month.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department hopes this will cut down …

Jail Violence, Budget Talks And County Roads

Jail funding -vs- road funding goes head to head
The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors point out they don't have unlimited funds.  Next month, however, they'll come together with county officials to hammer out next year's fiscal budget.

Department heads will make their respective cases next month, they said, and among those topics will be how the county is going to pay for increased jail operations cost once the new detention center opens its doors.

Construction at the North County facility isn't due to complete until 2018, but it's expected the annual cost to run that jail will be more than …

Jails Still Feeling Realignment Crunch

The California inmate realignment has been in effect for approximately 18 months.  Since that time more and more inmates are being transferred from state prisons to county jails.  This has caused overcrowded conditions on a local level and many detainees are being released via GPS monitoring devices in order to save bed space.

Jails throughout the state have been trying to adapt to the influx of inmates.  At least three counties are facing lawsuits because detainees say that access to medical care is not up to par. They have also alleged these jails lack the necessary substance abuse programs and …
