San Francisco Jails To Revisit Guard Gender Policies

In 2006, former San Francisco Sheriff Michael Hennessey came to a decision.  After year-on-year investigations that involved male deputies having illicit (not to mention illegal) relations with female inmates, he changed the rules.

All female inmates would be relocated to one, central facility and it could only be staffed by female deputies.

In theory it was a good idea, but in practicum, well not so much.  Less than a year after the switch, more than 30 deputies challenged that decision in court.

San Francisco Sheriff’s Department Deputies To Stand Trial

Two San Francisco Sheriff's Department deputies who have been accused of abusing a detainee have been ordered to stand trial.  The incident took place in 2010.  It was at that time that 38 year-old Darrell Hunter was arrested because of some sort of incident with a process server.  Hunter said that one of the deputies punched him in  the head.  Video surveillance at the jail seem to back up his story.  Those tapes show the defendant being struck in the head.  He was later thrown to the ground, handcuffed and dragged to a holding cell.

SF Sheriff Sued For Defamation

The leader of the San Francisco Sheriff's Department and his wife have reportedly been sued for defaming neighbors and lying to police.  The suit is linked to Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi's arrest late last year in which he was charged with domestic violence.

A neighbor said she placed a call to the SFPD in early 2012 out of concern for Eliana Lopez, who is married to the Sheriff.   The neighbor relayed to officers an incident in which Mirkarimi forcefully grabbed his wife's arm after an argument surrounding a potential vacation in South America.   She also turned over a video in which …
