Increased Medical Costs At San Joaquin County Jail

Officials at the San Joaquin County Jail have confirmed that medical costs at county detention centers have gone up markedly due to the state's inmate realignment program.  Many doctors and nurses say they are seeing many more patients now than in years past.  Some of the inmates are chronically ill.  All of these changes have led to an increase in the county's out of pocket expenses when it comes to providing medical care.

In California, the San Gabriel Valley Economic Partnership discussed with members of the community the effect they are seeing with public safety since the Assembly Bill 109 was implemented.

CA Prisoner Realignment Increases Jail Populations

 

California lawmakers have touted the success of the state's prisoner realignment program, saying that one year later they have successfully reduced the number of inmates being detained in state prisons. The program has worked so well, they said, that the Department of Corrections has said numbers are at their lowest point in 17 years.
