OC Deputy Faces Jail for Pizza Topping

A deputy with the Orange County Sheriff's Department has found himself in hot water after pepper spraying a teenager's pizza.

Pepper spray is bad enough when it gets in a person's eyes, and it apparently wreaks havoc on your insides when ingested.  A total of five people became sick as a result of the deputy's decision.

Authorities said the incident supposedly took place in the fall of 2012.  It was at that time that six-year OCSD veteran Juan Tavera pulled over an unnamed teenager during a routine traffic stop.

OCSD Sheriff Says Jails Are Underfunded After Realignment

The realignment first took effect in October 2011.  Under that program, which is also known as AB 109, certain state prisoners started being transferred to county jails in order to serve out the remainder of their sentences.  The state promised it would provide additional funding to the OCSD in order to offset additional costs. Hutchens said more than 30,000 detainees have been shifted to county jails since AB 109 was implemented.
