Inside the Jail: Gay Wing of LA’s Men’s Central

Throughout the nation, LGBT inmates say they struggle to find their place within jail and prison populations.

Standard procedure is to separate inmates by their gender, but sometimes, when it comes to gay, lesbian and transgender detainees, that’s a slippery slope.

The solution in the Los Angeles Men’s Central Jail has been a unique one: allow gay inmates to live in their own quarters. The idea wasn’t organic.

It stemmed from a 1985 ACLU lawsuit that alleged gay inmates were far more likely to endure physical violence at the hands of other detainees than their heterosexual counterparts.

LASD Jailers Found Guilty On All Counts, Face Jail Time

A half dozen former and current Los Angeles Sheriff's Department deputies who were accused of trying to thwart a federal investigation have been found guilty in a court of law.

Each had been charged with obstruction of justice and conspiracy for their part in trying to hide a jail inmate who had been working with the FBI.  They were even accused of trying to intimate a federal agent.

A spokesperson for the court said that while the final sentence won't be handed down for a few weeks, each of the named defendants is facing up to 15 years behind bars.

LASD Deputies Found Liable In Jail Beating

The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department has once again found itself in hot water.

Last week, a seven person jury found several LASD deputies liable for using excessive force. The case was filed in response to a 2008 incident that took place at the downtown Men's Central Jail.

At the time the incident took place, the accused are said to have called inmates out of their cells in order to have them searched for weapons and other contraband.  For unknown reasons, 21 detainees refused.

LASD Sheriff Held Fiscally Liable For Inmate Abuse

LASD Sheriff Lee Baca has been found to be personally liable for instances of inmate abuse that took place at the LA County Jail.

This, according to sources close to the case, means Baca may need to shell out upward of $100,000 of his own monies in order to settle the case.   The LASD is reportedly appalled by the decision and have said they intend to appeal the ruling.

The Department further notes this is the first time a Sheriff has been held personally liable in this type of case.

Pitchess Detention Center Could Get Womens’ Facility

The LA County Board of Supervisors has confirmed they are considering a plan that would construct a women's village at the Pitchess Detention Center.

The official proposal was submitted earlier this week by an LA-based construction management company.  The woman's village is just one-part of a multi-prong solution to replacing the Men's Central Jail.  That replacement of that facility has long been on the county's chopping block.

Proponents of the demolition reportedly say the facility is very old, outdated and too expensive to run.  They have been advocating for a plan that involves tearing it down and constructing upgraded facilities. The …

LA Men’s Central Jail To Be Demolished

The LA County Board of Supervisors has come to an agreement with regard to the demolition of Men's Central Jail.  They have not set a firm timeline that outlines any of the specifics.

One thing is for certain.  More information is needed.  A consultant has been hired to determine whether the current inmate population can be safely reduced.  If there are not any viable alternatives to incarceration a replacement jail will need to be built.

Elected Officals Address Mental Health Care In LA County Jails

Elected officials are said to be participating hearings that will help improve access to mental heath care within the LA County jails.  LASD Sheriff Lee Baca was supposed to participate last Friday.

 

It is said that he is working closely with a Senate committee in hopes of reducing very high recidivism rates.  It is believed that as many as 33,000 of the state's inmate population suffers from some form of mental illness.

Baca said the LASD is committed to improving access to mental health services within the LA County jails.

Part Of Men’s Central Jail Could Be Demolished

A representative from the Los Angeles Men's Central Jail has confirmed the county is considering a measure which would allow for a portion of the facility to be demolished.
