LASD, LAPD K-9s More Likely To Bite Than Long Beach Police Dogs

Recent statistics indicate that Long Beach Police Department dogs have a bite ration that is nearly three times less than their Los Angeles counterparts.

The LAPD and LASD dogs bite far more frequently, they said, and the Long Beach PD says they're happy to have such low numbers.   The bite ratio is calculated by comparing the number of bites against the number of dog-apprehended suspects.

In 2012 the LASD has a bite ratio of about 30 percent, according to recent numbers, while the LAPD's bite ration is about 20.5 percent.  When you contrast that with the 6 percent seen within the …

LA Jail Project Kisses $80 Million In State Funding Good Bye

Los Angeles County has long wanted to break ground on a women's jail project, but recent chatter out of Sacramento indicates their bid for $80 million in grant funding has been shot down.

Local detentions officials have long-hoped to construct a 1,600-bed facility at the Mira Loma Detention Center site.  In order to do that, they said, they'd use $100 million in state grant funding they received last year but would still need another $80 million this year in order to get the project off the ground.

LASD Deputies Found Liable In Jail Beating

The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department has once again found itself in hot water.

Last week, a seven person jury found several LASD deputies liable for using excessive force. The case was filed in response to a 2008 incident that took place at the downtown Men's Central Jail.

At the time the incident took place, the accused are said to have called inmates out of their cells in order to have them searched for weapons and other contraband.  For unknown reasons, 21 detainees refused.

Realignment Causing Some Women To Spend More Time In Jail

When elected officials passed the state's prisoner realignment plan, they thought they were solving a problem.  What they failed to realize was that shifting low level offenders to county jails was going to cause another.

At the current time, thousands of female offenders who would have been serving time in state prisons are being held in county jails.  Some of these detainees are serving time for white collar crimes, such as financial fraud.

Others have been convicted of non-violent non-serious offenses, such as property crimes and and lower level drug offenses.

LASD Sheriff Held Fiscally Liable For Inmate Abuse

LASD Sheriff Lee Baca has been found to be personally liable for instances of inmate abuse that took place at the LA County Jail.

This, according to sources close to the case, means Baca may need to shell out upward of $100,000 of his own monies in order to settle the case.   The LASD is reportedly appalled by the decision and have said they intend to appeal the ruling.

The Department further notes this is the first time a Sheriff has been held personally liable in this type of case.

LASD Norwalk Station Gets New Commander

A spokesperson for the LASD Norwalk Station has confirmed that Capt. Curtis Jensen is settling into his new role as the station's commander.

Jensen has been in the area for a number of years.  The 53 year-old was born in Lynwood and graduated from the local high school.  His tenure with the LASD has spanned more than three decades.

LA Men’s Central Jail To Be Demolished

The LA County Board of Supervisors has come to an agreement with regard to the demolition of Men's Central Jail.  They have not set a firm timeline that outlines any of the specifics.

One thing is for certain.  More information is needed.  A consultant has been hired to determine whether the current inmate population can be safely reduced.  If there are not any viable alternatives to incarceration a replacement jail will need to be built.

Murder Suspect Wrongly Released From Twin Towers Jail

Members of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department are asking for the public's help in locating an inmate who was mistakenly released from the Twin Towers Jail.  Authorities say the suspect, Johnny Mata, is the fourth detainee who has been wrongfully released this year.

Defendant Mata was booked into the Twin Towers Jail on charges relating to attempted murder.  He is believed to have gang ties and may be considered dangerous.  Jail officials say missing paperwork and understaffing led to the mistake.   They have also begun using a color coding system on files to indicate which inmates should be classified as …

LASD Deputies Allege Undocumented Inmate Abuse

Members of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department who were once part of a jail gang intelligence unit have filed a lawsuit against the LASD.  The suit alleges that after they filed findings that "named names", and outed sworn personnel that were involved in illegal activity, they were harassed.   Their attorneys feel these deputies were maliciously prosecuted for doing their job.

Supervisors Consider $22M To Help LASD Could Restore Patrols

The LA County Board of Supervisors is considering allocating $22 million to the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department. If the measure passes, Sheriff Lee Baca will use those funds to restore patrols to certain unincorporated areas.
