Are LA Jails Violating International Laws?

African Americans make up less than 10 percent of Los Angeles County's total jail population, but account for more than 40 percent of those who have been classified as having a serious mental illness.

Students and faculty at the UCLA School of Law have prepared an eight-page report that alleges the LA County Jails are incarcerating racial minorities who are mentally ill inmates at unsettling rates.

The authors of the report feel that these inmate populations would be better served by other types of community-based programs and that jailing these men and women is not appropriate.

The Good, Bad And Ugly Of CA’s Prisoner Realignment

It's been two years since Sacramento legislators implemented the CA prison realignment, and jails are still struggling to adapt to "the new normal".

It all started after a federal lawsuit alleged that conditions in state prisons were so overcrowded that inmates basic constitutional rights were being violated.   Judges agreed, and ordered the corrections department trim populations to more than 137.5% of rated capacity.

Since opening the doors and letting criminals free just wasn't an option, elected officials reportedly came up with a different plan.  Pass the buck to county jails.

Man Booked Into LA County Jail For Stealing Disney Passes

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles jails has confirmed they are detaining a man who is alleged to have stolen passes to Disneyland.  The 51 year-old defendant is said to have posed as a member of the Disney family.

Law enforcement officials said the man forged a driver's license in which he changed his last name do Disney.  He also falsified tax forms in order to reflect payment from Walt Disney Corporation.   The incident began when Stephen Urquidez aka Stephen Disney told a friend he was a member of a prominent local family that has ties to an internationally known …

Debate About Race-Based Lockdowns At LA Jails Is Ongoing

A California law that allows corrections officers to lockdown inmates at the Los Angeles jails based on race is coming under fire.  A spokesperson for the jails said they are overcrowded and that racial tensions run high.  When big fights break out between large groups of inmates of different ethnic backgrounds, all detainees of an ethnicity can be locked down.  This, they say, is done in order to enhance safety.

CA Prisoner Realignment Increases Jail Populations

 

California lawmakers have touted the success of the state's prisoner realignment program, saying that one year later they have successfully reduced the number of inmates being detained in state prisons. The program has worked so well, they said, that the Department of Corrections has said numbers are at their lowest point in 17 years.

Implemented as AB109, the mandate was simple. Non serious non violent and non sexual offenders were to be transferred to county jails to serve out the remainder of their sentences.  This would ensure that the state prison system was only housing individuals who committed the most …
