Elected Officals Address Mental Health Care In LA County Jails

Elected officials are said to be participating hearings that will help improve access to mental heath care within the LA County jails.  LASD Sheriff Lee Baca was supposed to participate last Friday.

 

It is said that he is working closely with a Senate committee in hopes of reducing very high recidivism rates.  It is believed that as many as 33,000 of the state's inmate population suffers from some form of mental illness.

Baca said the LASD is committed to improving access to mental health services within the LA County jails.

Pretrial Los Angeles Inmates May Be Relesaed Early

A spokesperson for the said they are continuing to feel the pinch brought on by a federal mandate that required California reduce its prisoner population.  In order to comply, Gov. Jerry Brown ordered certain lower level inmates be transferred to county jails to serve out the remainder of their sentences.  Those facilities, including the Twin Towers Jail in LA, are now at near capacity themselves.

Sheriffs' officials from throughout the state have begun to explore ways to "relieve pressure".  In Los Angeles, a plan which would allow additional pretrial inmates to be released is currently being explored.   As of late …

Inside the New LAPD Metro Center Jail

New $74-Million LAPD Jail Remains Locked
The LAPD began construction of the new 172,000 square-foot Metropolitan Detention Center four years ago with $70-million in public funds. However, today it's still not being used.

The Los Angeles Police Department is still using the run-down and overpopulated Parker Center jail located in downtown LA. Due to the lack of funds, they are unable to hire jailers to run this five-floor structure, which is one of the largest structures of its kind.
