Throughout the nation, LGBT inmates say they struggle to find their place within jail and prison populations.

Standard procedure is to separate inmates by their gender, but sometimes, when it comes to gay, lesbian and transgender detainees, that’s a slippery slope.

The solution in the Los Angeles Men’s Central Jail has been a unique one: allow gay inmates to live in their own quarters. The idea wasn’t organic.

It stemmed from a 1985 ACLU lawsuit that alleged gay inmates were far more likely to endure physical violence at the hands of other detainees than their heterosexual counterparts.

LA Jails To Finally Become ADA Compliant

Disabled and wheelchair-bound inmates at the LA County Jails have will get a bit of relief.

Elected officials said they will be moving forward with plans to redesign the county lock-ups to ensure the facilities are ADA compliant.  This, according to sources, ends a six-year long legal battle.

Inmates have long complained that bathrooms were not wheelchair accessible and because of that, some people were soiling themselves. Others were falling out of their chairs altogether because they do not have wall-bars to grab onto.

Getting in and out of shower facilities posed a whole other list of dangerous situations.

ICE Deal To Be Extended In LA County Jails

Earlier this week, the LA County Board of Supervisors voted 3-0 to extend a controversial partnership that allows immigration officials to target non-legal status inmates who have been convicted of serious crimes, and determine whether they can be deported once their sentences are up.

The remaining two supes abstained.

Immigration activists have already started to speak out against the decision, saying it only serves to drive a further wedge between residents and law enforcement officials within the city's immigrant communities.

Are Jails Overcrowded Because Of Greedy Bail Bondsmen?

If bail industry opponents were to have their way they'd have everyone convinced that jail crowding could be solved by getting rid of the commercial bail bonds industry.
