CA Officals Will Fight Order To Release 10,000 More Prisoners

Elected officials from throughout California have pledged to fight a court order that requires the state release an additional 10,000 prisoners.   Many believe this will cause spikes in crime in all areas of the state.

The battle between the courts and state prisons has been going on for years.

Federal judges feel that overcrowded conditions is a violation of inmates' constitutional rights.   They had preciously ordered California reduce inmate populations to an extent that prisons are not operating at more than 137.5% capacity.

The state has almost complied.  Gov. Jerry Brown points out that inmate overcrowding has (more…)

No Expansion For San Joaquin County Jail

The San Joaquin County Jail has turned down more than $80 million in state funding that would have enabled it to add more bed space.

A spokesperson for the detention facility said this decision is a complete reversal from a previous push to expand. Back then, it was believed that having the ability to house more criminals would help reduce instances of crime within the county.

The County Board of Supervisors has pointed out that adding the planned 1,280 beds would increase the jail's operating costs by more than $70 million each year.

The supervisors feel that money can be better spent. A spokesperson …

Santa Rita Jail May Still Receive Monterey County Inmates

A proposal that would allow upward of 60 inmates to be transferred from Monterey County to the Santa Rita Jail is still being considered. The matter is scheduled to be discussed by the county board of supervisors later this week.   Monterey County detention officers say they are hopeful the measure will pass.  It will help alleviate some of the overcrowding within their facilities.

A spokesperson for the jail said they have a rated capacity of 824.  As of February 1, they are holding more than 1,150 inmates.  The county's public defender office has since filed a lawsuit.  They have alleged …

Jails Still Feeling Realignment Crunch

The California inmate realignment has been in effect for approximately 18 months.  Since that time more and more inmates are being transferred from state prisons to county jails.  This has caused overcrowded conditions on a local level and many detainees are being released via GPS monitoring devices in order to save bed space.

Jails throughout the state have been trying to adapt to the influx of inmates.  At least three counties are facing lawsuits because detainees say that access to medical care is not up to par. They have also alleged these jails lack the necessary substance abuse programs and …

Santa Rita Jail Will Receive Monterey County Realignment Inmates

A spokesperson for the Santa Rita Jail has confirmed that they will soon begin to house inmates from Monterey County.

The motion was approved by the Monterey County board of supervisors.  The $2.5 million contract will allow up to 80 detainees to be transferred to the Dublin facility.  The agreement is scheduled to expire in June of next year.  The ACLU has said they are angered that community meetings were not held prior to this decision being made.

The supervisors said the contract will be funded through state realignment money.   California legislators have granted large sums of money to county jails …

Debate About Race-Based Lockdowns At LA Jails Is Ongoing

A California law that allows corrections officers to lockdown inmates at the Los Angeles jails based on race is coming under fire.  A spokesperson for the jails said they are overcrowded and that racial tensions run high.  When big fights break out between large groups of inmates of different ethnic backgrounds, all detainees of an ethnicity can be locked down.  This, they say, is done in order to enhance safety.

Several weeks ago, a brawl between more than 60 black and African American inmates broke out at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility.  Four were hospitalized. The jail said that this …

CA Bail Bonds Industry Takes A Hit After Realignment

California bail bonds company owners have said that the state's inmate realignment program has had a negative impact on their business.

The realignment came about in late 2011 after the US Supreme Court ordered CA prisons to reduce their inmate populations.  This caused Gov. Jerry Brown to implement a plan that transferred certain offenders from state facilities to county jails to serve out their sentences.   County jails soon began busting at the seams and many have begun releasing inmates before their sentences have concluded.  They are also releasing an increasing number of pretrial offenders on their own recognizance (OR) because …

Increased Medical Costs At San Joaquin County Jail

Officials at the San Joaquin County Jail have confirmed that medical costs at county detention centers have gone up markedly due to the state's inmate realignment program.  Many doctors and nurses say they are seeing many more patients now than in years past.  Some of the inmates are chronically ill.  All of these changes have led to an increase in the county's out of pocket expenses when it comes to providing medical care.

Jail staff have pointed out that county facilities were initially designed to detain inmates for up to a year.  Under the state's prisoner realignment program, under which …

Woodland Police Department Officer Assaulted During Traffic Stop

A spokesperson for the Woodland Police Department said one of its offices sustained non life-threatening injuries when he was attacked during a routine traffic stop.  The incident first unfolded last Saturday morning when an unnamed officer took note of a cyclist riding on a sidewalk.  That cyclist, he said, was non-compliant in that it did not have an operative light installed.

The individual was stopped and it was soon determined he was on probation and because of that, was subject to search.  The officer said he believed defendant Reggie Dickerson was holding contraband in in his t-shirt.  At the time …
