Deputies Look Forward To A Bigger, Better Indio Jail

Representatives from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department corrections division are hoping the new Indio jail will not only help reduce jail crowding, but that it will also help ease tensions within the inmate population.

Sources close to the jails say things have gotten so packed that some offenders are getting in trouble on purpose, just so they can be tossed in the SHU.

Expanded Riverside County Jail Will Focus On Rehabalitation, Education

Inside The Jails
There's been a lot of back and forth about what lies ahead for the yet-to-be-built Indio Jail.

For one, if a person is arrested and winds up being held there, their only visitation with friends and family members will be via video conferencing.

And although that's a change that's being implemented at detention centers throughout the country, what's new for this particular facility is that inmates will likely have access to all sorts of training programs.
Offsetting overcapacity
The Riverside County Jail system, like others in the state, have been dealing with growing pains brought on by inmate overcrowding.

Indio Jail Expansion Project Gains Steam

The current Indio Jail is able to detain about 350 inmates.  The county board of supervisors, though, has said a plan to add an additional 1,250 beds continues to gain traction.

A source close to the project said they will be reviewing the environmental impact report before the end of the month.

 

The project is expected to conclude by 2016.  Once it's finished the new facility will be referred to as the East County Detention Center.  The construction has (more…)
