California Counties Undermine State Plan to Reduce Prison Crowding

Mandate to Decrease Population
Legislation was passed nearly three years ago in California by Gov. Jerry Brown to bring a sharp decrease in the state prison overcrowding.

The plan was to keep more low-level inmates in county jails for longer periods and saving space in state prisons for violent and sexual offenders. A surge in the number of people being sentenced to serve prison time since the legislation passed has confounded the efforts of the state.

Sesame Street Teaches Kids I Is For Incarceration

In the United States it is estimated that more than 2.7 million kids have parents that are serving time in state or federal prisons.

Corrections department officers said this reflects an 80% spike from numbers reported 20 years ago.

This, according to Sesame Street representatives, is why they are creating a production that is geared toward helping these children cope with a new series called "Little Children, Big Challenges".
