A naked man who broke int a local church and proceeded to smash and break religious statues has been arrested by the Milpitas Police Department.

Although it is still unknown what prompted 30 year-old Michael Vickroy to shed his clothes and wreak havoc within the church, drugs could very well have been a factor.

The booking photo, which has been released by the county jail, indicates the defendant was likely high at the time of his arrest.

Milpitas Police dispatchers said they received a call at about 5:30 in the morning on August 7.  The caller indicated they saw a nude man walking into the St. John's Church on Able Street.

Officers responded as fast as they could.  When they arrived, they found the suspect, sans clothes, smashing candle holders, statues and other undisclosed items.  Planters were tipped over, both inside and outside of the building.

He was taken into custody without incident.

The head of the congregation walked through the building with officers.  He described the scene as being chaotic.  He still can't quite grasp what happened, and reportedly said the damage is estimated to range between $15,000 and $20,000.

The same confused and sad sentiment was shared with parishioners, who started to arrive a short time later to attend a 7 a.m. mass.  They helped the father clean up the mess and stayed for church services.

The defendant remains in custody at the Santa Clara County Jail.  A spokesperson said he's being charged with felony vandalization of a church.

Anyone who has further information about the crime is reportedly asked to contact the Milpitas Police Department.
